I kept track of the 7PM ET – World Report on CNN as well as Amanpour which airs at 5PM ET. During this time, I realized that there were quite a number of advertisements related to the use of disinfectants. The most dominant ad was the ad on dettol. It would flash in during the commercial break. There are various ways in which it is brought out; as a way to kill germs on the body, clothes, surfaces and water. Generally, the argument is that the use of dettol can lead to better health as it can help to protect the entire family from infection by the disease causing germs. The various illustrations address different aspects of hygiene.
It could be argued that these ads are aligned with this show since it has quite a large viewing. After a busy day’s work, many people would like to tune in and see what has been going on around the globe. The shows, therefore, tend to capture a captive audience as many people take this time to be relaxed at home with their families. As such, the information provided tends to be fit for the whole family and it captures the intended audience.
The main targets of the ads are the women and caretakers. This is mainly because these are the people who are concerned with maintaining hygiene and cleanliness around the house. They are also the people who are charged with taking care of the children, preparing meals and doing much of the chores around the house. As such, associating the disinfectants with activities that this target group engages in on a frequent basis tends to be quiet appealing to them. This is quite convincing, and it can be said to be one of the reasons as to why the disinfectants have become quite a household commodity.
The adverts also tend to be divided along the age groups. For instance, the women and the adult members of the house are shown carrying out tough jobs during the day which lead to sweating. This brings about an uncomfortable feeling. However, after cleaning the clothes with the disinfectant and bathing with the same, there is such a relaxed feeling. Well, this is just an indication that the advert is targeted towards the working group. Focusing on the children, the ads show the children at school playing with other children as well as other items which might not be disinfected. They then indicate that as the children go home and start eating or handling food without washing their hands, they transfer the germs to other places and even ingest them. This acts as a caution to the children to be careful and use such products as hand wash. Well, this seems to be quite effective a marketing strategy.
As a matter of fact, I did not come across an ad which can be said to be stereotyped. Probably, this is because the cable broadcast is aimed for a metropolitan community which comprises of people from different backgrounds. There is also the fact that the modern society is quiet critical on everything and sensitive on matters of discrimination. As such, the broadcasting houses cannot be so careless as to air something that would have a negative impact on their public relations. Therefore, the ads have been well screened and assessed to make sure that they do not go against the virtues observed in the modern society.
