Lastly, motivation must involve persistence where one practices perseverance. Motivation in an organization is essential for its overall performance (Nelson & Campel, 2015) .Intrinsic motivation is the self sense of direction that an individual has to achieve intrinsic awards. Intrinsic motivation aims at intrinsic rewards. While extrinsic motivation is the act of doing a task with the aim of acquiring the extrinsic awards
Abraham Maslow‘s theory in his hierarchy of needs, includes: physiological needs are basic needs of human beings such as food clothes and shelter. Individuals are motivated by these needs to work. The safety needs are those that ensure that one is safe and protected from danger. He explains the social needs as those that create a sense of belonging for instance belonging. In the hierarchy the fourth stage is that of esteem where one aims to acquire status and attention. Self actualization needs calls achievement of one’s potential and also self fulfillment. In his theory, Maslow explains that when one achieves a lower order in the hierarchy of needs his satisfaction moves to that of a higher rank (Robbins, Millet& Boyle, 2014).
The equity theory explains that employees are concerned with what they get in their jobs. They look at their salary levels, recognition and the speculated increase in salaries after gaining some experience. They relate them with the contribution they give to the organization (Linstead, Fulop & Liley, 2009). In the theory, individual compare their qualifications and salaries to that of other individuals and if they are equal they feel satisfied. The equity theory thus had four referent comparisons that are self –inside, self-outside, other-outside and other-inside.
