Introduction
The setting in this case is a dialogue. It is based on a private language. The dialogue is between my friend Peter and I. We are halving a walk by the market and, embark on a topic about women.
Me: yes indeed
Peter: But to your left is a real stone
Me: oh no I think it is a fruit as well
Peter: it depends on your taste
This is a form of private language. Fruit and stone are used in this language to describe beautiful and ugly women. Fruit stands for beautiful women while stone stands for ugly ones.
Analysis
This private language was started as a way of expressing feelings about women. The codes stone and fruit are used since they are very abundant in this area. They are also symbolic of the two aspects in beauty. The essence of codifying was to make sure that people did not easily understand the subject of discussion. It is evident that our culture has some reservations on matters pertaining admiration of the opposite sexes. A descent language is needed to pass on your feelings about sexuality. Private language helps keep the subject of discussion secret to the people around. The language continues being used by other people than the inventors. This is because they find it appropriate in their social set up. They are able to discuss the subject of sexuality freely and in an inexplicit way.
The inventors of our code chose to use code words instead of standard words because people would not be suspicious. They could thus use the private language virtually everywhere without much concern.
Conclusion
Private language is used to discuss subjects, which the society deems inappropriate. This makes it possible for people to discuss issues anywhere without contravening social values. It usually gives birth to new languages.
