Introduction
The term Manifest Destiny was coined in 1845 by John O’Sullivan, a newspaper editor. It was the belief in divine providence where Americans people believed that they were destined to control the land by expanding their territory. In addition, they also hoped to achieve economic stability and freedom for the people (Jarnow, 2014). Even though the doctrine was taught in all sorts of gatherings, it faced numerous opposing views since some Americans doubted its veracity. In the United States, Manifest Destiny had both positive and adverse effects on the nation.
Pro: The main pro of territorial expansion meant progress and improvement. Through this expansion, America has managed to become the most powerful nation in the world making it easier for them acquire more resources (Trish, 2014). However, their take-over has led to increased war and conflict between America and other nations as they fight imperialism.
Pro: The expansion was also good for trade, farming and industries since it gave young people an employment chance in the upcoming industries (Trish, 2014). Since more land was acquired, agriculture could be undertaken in large scale and the produce had a broader market which boosted their growth. However, cases of slavery increased during Manifest Destiny since most displaced persons were forced to work for Native Americans.
Pro: Manifest Destiny also paved the way for Americans to expand and share their culture including their democratic and religious ways. They thought that people would benefit from their culture and that it would push capitalism and democracy into action. However, the few who disregarded the American way of life were made slaves, an act that is deemed unconstitutional. In addition, they used religion to manipulate their neighbours in an effort to acquire their land (Dingess, 2015).
Conclusion
Manifest Destiny was great for America’s economic improvement since other nations got to embrace the American way of life. However, slavery increased since those who opposed this philosophy were mistreated, displaced, and even killed.
