Problem Solving- Scenario One
Problem Solving- Choosing between completing college and taking up a job.
The problem present here is a choice between two options; college education or a job. The new job is out of state which in turn means that to take up the job. I would have to quit college. The job offers attractive benefits including car, housing, and relocation allowances besides an attractive remuneration. The current job does not offer college fees reimbursement but supports my present studies. I am nearing the completion of my studies and nearly taking my last exams, which would be cut short, should I take up the job offer. The problem is deciding on what course of action to take. Whether to stay in my current job, and complete my education or take up this new job, give up college and start all over again in a new state.
Problem Analysis-2
The first option is to stay at my current job, where I have been for 15 years. 15 years of work means that I have developed extensive networks and created a niche and a name at my current workplace. In addition to the present comfort, the current workplace offers reimbursement of tuition fees which saves me from the college tuition expenditure. The current workplace is within the state where I study, making it possible for me to complete my education. Having been in college for four years and nearing completion, it makes sense to complete my education by sitting for my final examination. The degree will also improve my opportunities for promotion in future and opens up avenues for further education for me.
On the other hand, the new job opportunity presents a lucrative position and come with great benefits. To begin with, it offers a $ 15,000 pay increment. In addition to the attractive salary, the offer comes with relocation allowance, which will ease my move from one place to the other, and a car allowance. The new position is also a promotion from my present post. The challenge is that the starting time for new post coincided with my final exams, which means that I would have to quit college. In addition, the new post does not offer college tuition fees reimbursement, which means that I would have to fully fund my education.
Possible Solutions- (generated options for solving the problems)
The first possible solution is to stay at my current post, complete my education and seek better opportunities later, or hope for a promotion at my current workplace. This will mean that I forego the great benefits that this new position has. On the flip side, I could take up this new position and find a way to complete my education while there, after letting go of this opportunity.
Analysis of the Solutions-4 evaluations of the options for solutions
The first option of staying at my current place is the one with least risks since I get to maintain the status quo and postpone the gratification of a better salary and benefits that the new position offers. It will, however, leave me with the guilt of having turned down a promising opportunity. On the other hand, taking up this new opportunity comes with all the extra benefits that it offers. It will compromise my education while it stills presents me with the bigger challenge of not only completing my bachelors degree, but also finishing my masters degree in order to fit into the new role.
Selecting the best Solution- 5 deciding on the solution
Since it is often hard to come to get new opportunities with such great benefits, I am inclined towards finding a way to take up this new opportunity and also find a way to make it through my education. According to the Princeton Review, it is possible to transfer credits from one college to another (2016). I could consider taking up the job and transferring my credits to go and complete my final year of study at the new college, then proceed for my master’s degree. On the question of reimbursement of college fees, I would find a way to fund my own education. The College Board estimates the cost of college education at $23, 000 for out of state students (2016). The salary increment is $ 15,000, which can take care of a good portion of the tuition fees and relieve me of the burden.
Plan for the next course of action-6 explanation on implementation
I will request the new company to allow me two weeks t sit for my final exams before reporting. Should this request be declined, I will report to work and defer my studies as I try to get a college to hitch I can transfer my credits and complete my final year of study. I will use the salary increment to cater for education costs for both bachelors and masters degree.
