As an assistant to newly elected city council member, Sharon Gonzalez, what would one recommend regarding the proposal to put up a Super Sam’s mega store in the city of Cooper?
Analysis/Objective
The decision to vote for or against the proposal to establish a Super Sam’s mega store in the region has to take several things into consideration. A primary consideration is that the store will generate the much needed revenue for the region but it may also cause a public outcry against the proposal. The concerns of the residents of the community include those of public safety, increase in traffic and a detrimental effect on the air and water quality. Moreover, the small store owners are worried that the super store will kill their businesses.
Alternative Solutions
Solution #1: The first alternative solution is to reject the establishment of Super Sam’s mega store in the city of Cooper.
Pros: a. The small businesses within the city will be happy with the decision because there will be no competition.
b. It will prevent the possible air and water pollution in the city.
c. Public safety will not be disturbed and traffic will not worsen.
Cons: a. The business will be brought to another town which means lost opportunity to generate revenue for Cooper.
b. The city will remain a “sleepy” city without modern amenities.
c. Opportunity to increase visitors, investors and jobs will be forgone.
Solution #2: The second alternative solution is to agree to the putting up of a Super Sam’s mega store in the city of Cooper.
Pros: a. The development will generate the much needed revenue for the city.
b. The city will become popular; thus, attracting more visitors and investors.
c. It will provide more jobs to the residents of the city.
Cons: a. It might result in a huge public outcry especially from the small businessmen.
b. Air and water pollution might increase.
c. Problems on public safety and traffic might manifest.
Recommended Solution
It is recommended that Sharon Gonzalez vote for the approval of the establishment of Super Sam’s mega store in the city of Cooper. It is believed that it is to the greater benefit of the city to agree to the proposal to put up Super Sam because sooner or later, the city has to open up to big investors; otherwise, it will remain an undeveloped community and will be left out by the other adjacent towns. Considering that the site chosen by Super Sam is undeveloped, the proposal will transform the site from an idle, non-earning piece of land to a revenue-generating one.
Action Steps
Several action steps must be taken to gain the support of the community members regarding the establishment of Super Sam. First of all, the council should explain to the residents that the city will benefit from the revenues and employment that will be generated by the project. Sales of the small businesses might even increase because more visitors will come to Cooper. They will not only patronize Super Sam, but also the other local stores. The concern on the air and water pollution might not be valid because these big stores usually have ways to preserve the air and water quality of the communities they serve. With regards to the concern on public safety and traffic, this may be addressed by increasing the number of law enforcers.
