Having a younger sister is wonderful. However, having a smaller sister can be very challenging. I personally have a smaller sister and I care very much for her, I like to help her whenever she needs my help and whenever she needs it not. I want to teach her permanently how life is, to share with her life experiences and to motivate her. Although there is no specific receipt in dealing with younger sisters, I can describe my personal process in dealing with my little sister.
Little sisters can be stubborn and can react to everything the older brothers want to teach them. Moreover, they can be very spoiled and act irresponsible, because they can get used to somebody cleaning after them. It is no simple dealing with all these challenges coming from a cute person, but always bear in mind the manipulative power behind a pretty, cute, innocent face.
So this is my strategy: first of all I am trying to determine her to think that I am treating her as an adult. Smaller brothers or sisters enjoy so much when they are considered at the same level of seriousness with their bigger brothers or sisters. Therefore, my approach is this: “I want to discuss with you about something very serious and I am sure that you will understand, because you are now a big girl and a very smart girl”. This argument is meant to provoke her into becoming an active listener and to really get involved in the discussion.
In addition, making them understand that their opinion matters is again, a very strong argument in determining them to really listen to you. Therefore, the next step in my strategy is to tell my little sister: “You know, I really want to know what you think about this. What do you say? Let’s talk because you can help me and I can help you and we can both help each other and we should reach an understanding”. This first step of the process is very important, as you win her on your side and you make her a part of your plan.
Ok, now that this approach is settled and you have made her feel: (1) responsible; (2) important in the decision making process, you can present her your actual feelings, ideas, impressions about the topic you want to discuss with her.
In a way, this is a manipulative strategy, but everything we do is manipulation through negotiation. If you will not use it, she will do it, with her innocent and cute eyes, so be very careful and do not let yourself deceived.
The next step is getting her close to you, making her understand that you are her friend and you are helping her in making a choice. So, you should apply the “best friend strategy”. An approach of the kind: “I know what you are going through, I’ve been there myself and maybe I can help you” could win her confidence in you. Of course, this is not solely an approach, because as a big brother or a big sister you are solely interested in her good being.
It is very important in this process to maintain your focus on your objective: determining your sister to proactively listen to you. Therefore, in order for her not to understand your strategy (because she will react by acting against it) you should be very tactical about the way you implement it.
