1. Write a short summary of a Professional Code of Ethics
Ethics refers to our moral standards that guide us in every activity we undertake. It is a rational manner in which we conduct ourselves in the middle of others and our expectations of how other people should treat us.
Project management Institute (PMI) Code of ethics and professional conduct
This code of conduct was revised by the Ethics Standard Development Committee (ESDC) and approved in October 2006 by the board of directors. Before approval ESDC engaged in consultations with several stakeholders including PMI members, volunteers, practitioners and 24 renowned non- profit organizations .This was to enhance transparency as per the international code of ethics charter.
The code of ethics was established to enhance transparency and integrity in the project management profession and instill moral virtues to new and existing practitioners. This code of ethics is applicable to all PMI members and non members, who are PMI certificate holders, serve as volunteers or those who have recently applied for PMI certification
2. Write a short reflection on the code of ethics you choose
a) Did you agree with everything that was stated? Why or why not?
I agree with the whole content written in the document. This is because the code of ethics has been categorized into major ethical concerns that determine success and continuity of any profession. In addition, the document is written about the international code of ethics rules that govern all corporations, private enterprises and professional bodies.
b) Were there other ethical considerations you would have included? If so, what’s missing?
Yes. The document did not include ethical guidelines for accountability. This part is important in every code of ethics document since it describes requirements and consequences that a company or private practitioners should observe while discharging their duties. Moreover, the document did not include explicit responsibilities and consequences of PMI members and non-members in their line of duty towards their clients.
c) As an ethical leader, how would you use the code to promote ethical practices in your organization?
In my capacity as an ethical leader, I would apply PMI code of ethics and professional conduct to harmonize the ethical code of conduct in my organization with the key ethical pillars observed in PMI ethical code of conduct. These pillars include honesty respect and fairness. I will ensure that these pillars serve as driving forces to all members in observing the set standards to achieve the objectives of the organization.
3. Identify the ethical theories/approaches emphasized in the code of ethics
One of the theories that feature in the PMI code of ethics is the Universal Ethics theory, where responsibilities are totally based on moral virtues. They can be applied in every professional body. For instance respect, honesty and fairness are morally accepted in the society
Another theory is Utilitarianism, which says that ethic code of conduct is established for the benefit of the majority. This is true because if all PMI members observe the set standards, individual clients, corporate clients and any other interested member will benefit. For instance, honesty by PMI members will enhance the credibility to both practitioners and the PMI professional body.
4. Include the URL or a copy of the code as an attachment.
