I am a female international student from Saudi Arabia, taking a masters course in Risk Management as well as an undergraduate in nursing. On 8th February 2012, I received a dismissal letter due to the failure to meet the minimum requirement of 3 G.P.A. however, I seek to petition this move for the reasons stated below.
First of all, the education system and the policies are new to me, and as such I had problems acclimatizing to the situation. Secondly, I come from a conservative society in which a girl is not supposed to be all by herself in the world. I have challenged this and have come this far just to pursue my dream, and I would not like it to shatter after all the efforts. I also had a problem settling since I come from a single parent family, and had to use my own funds before my scholarship was approved.
For the first semester, I had no idea about the system of education, and so I just did what was scheduled for me. For the second semester, I enquired from my previous director for advice on how to go about it. I took 1 graduate course and 2 undergraduate courses. I took 10 graduate courses and 3 undergraduate courses making up 14 courses rather than the 14 he had recommended. I tried my best though I did not manage to produce to my best ability since I was under stress and my future here as not certain. I got a C+ and the letter followed. I find this quite unfair since the above were first semester courses, meaning that the evaluation should not be based upon them because it would put me at a disadvantage. I went to the director but his response was not in my favor, claiming that I should join another program. However, my passion is in what I am doing now, and I believe I have the potential. Furthermore, the course is not as tough as nursing; therefore, I have the ability to cope just as well as I handle nursing.
Inn addition to this, I received the letter in the middle of the 2nd Semester. This greatly affected me psychologically. It also put me in a tricky situation since it is impossible to find a school in the middle of the semester. I would have been appropriate to receive this letter at the end of the first semester. I decided to drop the undergraduate classes inorder to concentrate on my graduate class, this was after meeting the grduate school director. I am unable to add 14 credits.
I have put in place measures to ensure that my performance is improved and I also maintain myself in the course. I will make arrangements with the immigration department, my sponsor and the faculty at school so that I can take the courses as follows:
I will also make arrangements with my director to reduce the workload so that I can improve on my performance and boost my GPA. Under normal circumstances, I feel that I feel that I have all it takes to make it in this course. I have come too far to lose it all at this point. I therefore request for a reconsideration of my dismissal and request for a second chance. I promise to do all in my ability to succeed. I look forward to a positive consideration.
