During the Third Session of the 2010 National Academy of Engineering Grand Challenge, Vikram Rao an Executive Director of the Research Triangle Energy Consortium discussed strategies that could be applied by the current generation to promote energy self-sufficiency ("Summit Series on the NAE Grand Challenges"). In his opinion, one of the key strategies that modern engineers can apply to achieve this objective is to develop energy efficient machines such as the Electric Car. However, he went further and noted that this could be a temporal solution to the current energy challenges experienced by consumers and developmental stakeholders. Besides, Vikram Rao was of the opinion that even though the development and the use of the electric car could not provide amicable solutions, the concept of the electric car is imperative because it illustrates the contemporary energy challenges.
Responsibility of Electric Engineers in the Resolution of the above Challenge
Firstly, is important to acknowledge that electric engineers play a key role in the provision of sources of energy that are used in the industrial sector as well as for domestic use. However, as energy experts, electric engineers also play a significant role in the identification of sustainable energy sources together with conservative strategies of energy use that could facilitate the achievement of energy sufficiency. Electric engineers can achieve this objective by engaging in research and innovation; this is important because it stimulates knowledge development, hence, leading to the creation energy self-sufficiency. Through innovation, electric engineers are also able to devise or identify alternative sources of energy that would enhance sustainability and conservative use of modern sources of energy. Consequently, electric engineers have the responsibility to develop energy sources that are not harmful to human and environmental health.
