Proper Essay Example About Choosing A Major

Choosing a major is not easy for young people. We need help from someone who has experience. Unfortunately, I did not get that help, and so I began my path to becoming a mechanical engineer. I realize now that that might not have been the best choice for me, but I also realized that, in my case, life is too short to change what we have already started.
I was born in the 80’s, and as I was growing up in the 90’s, our government began showing professional stimuli on television. Because the government was in need of youth employment in the engineering disciplines for the growth of the country, they created engineering workshops in the high schools that were to be directed by the students. When I reached high school, I chose my area of study as a general mechanic. After high school, I did not go to college because I needed a full-time job. I gained experience with many jobs until I began working at a desalination plant, where I stayed for ten years as a mechanic. At the end of that time, my government granted me a scholarship to learn English and continue my education in the United States. This was a great chance for me and though I knew that there were other areas for which I was better suited, I was already on my way to becoming an engineer.
Recently I got married and I am planning for a family. A good career and salary are very important to me now, so that I can provide for my family and give them a good life. In my company, an engineering degree will bring a great increase in salary as well as a higher position in the company. .Also, a degree from an American university brings higher wages in my country, so I feel that, overall, I have made a good choice for my future.
I realize now that I might have been better suited to work in social work, counseling or education. But since I have already chosen my career path, I know I can use my natural social and interpersonal skills to my advantage and to the advantage of my company. There is a lack of good management in my work place. When I return to my company with an engineering degree and I am placed in a management position, I know I can use my education, experience, and my social skills to help make improvements in management. I can also teach people the skills to make changes for themselves.
I consider it a great advantage that I have excellent social and interpersonal skills. I find it easy to establish relationships with people. However, I am also aware that not everyone has these skills. If one choses to continue on a path that one did not necessarily chose for themselves, I suggest you start working on your strengths before you think of branching out to the path of your own choice. Admittedly, good social and interpersonal skills are easy to apply in other fields, but it doesn’t mean that there is no other option left for those who are thinking about pursuing a different career. It all boils down to what one can do best. If your strength is in writing but you don’t have any formal training, perhaps you can venture towards being an advertising copywriter, or be a freelance writer and take advantage of the flexibile working hours. Starting up a business on the side is also a good option, but perhaps it is better to start small and to stick with what you know best before putting up a business. You can always make things work, as long as you does not let his mind be hampered by doubts and other emotions that could weaken the resolve.
I will continue on my chosen path, but I would like to share with others how important it is to think about their interests and their choices before making a final decision. Sure, it is possible that you may end up not liking your first choice, and like me, you don’t have the luxury of changing your path. But that doesn’t mean you should give up altogether and just let yourself be buried in a career that you don’t enjoy. Most people get disheartened by this realization, but that is the wrong reaction. Be creative and try imagining things that you feel are possible and are within your reach. Set an additional goal, while you are working on being better at where your first choice of major has led you. The possibilities are many, and only your mind can limit you from doing something. My advice to them is that life is too short to change what you have already started, so make the right choice from the beginning. Don’t feel overburdened, because as long as you are choosing what is right and best for you, you will never go wrong. Also, be prepared to fail. Accept that you are still experimenting, and that you may end up making more mistakes. Ask people, talk to those who know, and listen to your heart and mind. What you choose to do next doesn’t have to be grand (although it would be nice if it is), because the reward there is that you are able to do and give to yourself what you really want. So free yourself from the constraints and find another place for yourself to grow.
