The topic that was the most interesting to me among all was Gender Dysphoria. It added to the previous understanding I had about transgender people. They want to belong to the gender different from one’s sex to the point that it causes distress in one’s life is called Gender Dysphoria. Having read about Gender Dysphoria helped me understand the magnitude of distress faced by the people with this condition.
One thing that was difficult for me to understand the Gender Dysphoria as a mental disorder. As the document accurately states that not every transgender person can be diagnosed with Gender Dysphoria. The condition is specific to the people who face significant stress and impairment in daily activities because of the condition. What should be noted here is that this stress and impairment in daily life activities can only originate if the person is victimized by the people around them and his or her change in identity isn’t accepted. Otherwise, a person with a transgender identity would be comfortable with their life while living as the gender they can connect with. If the cause of distress is due to the unacceptable behavior of society at large (and tendency to victimize people with transgender identity), the problem lies with the society, not the individual. Why, then, Gender Dysphoria, is a mental disorder? It would make more sense to term it as a mental illness if being transgender itself was the cause of distress instead of the society’s reaction about it.
