The best way to achieve anything fairly is through negotiation. Negotiation works best when two parties want to settle disputes or business deals on a win-win situation. Negotiation is more appropriate when both the parties concerned are aware of all ground realities of the problem under discussion. Mutual trust is the foundation for effective negotiation; therefore, for a negotiation to succeed both the parties must be patient enough to listen to each other. For instance, politicians negotiate with the voters who patiently listen to their promises and get them elected because of trust. Negotiation is effective when individuals or parties wish to get along with long term personal or business relationships.
When either of the parties sitting across the negotiation table is emotional, the negotiation is more likely to fail since emotion stops individuals to listen to the other person. Emotions lead individuals to think about revenge and punishment rather than settling on amicable solutions to problems. Negotiation is inappropriate when individuals do not open up, and instead pretend as though they are listening to the other person’s point of view. Similarly, negotiation between two parties belonging to different cultural backgrounds fails unless both the parties spend time to understand each other.
I consider negotiation as a symbol of weakness sometimes. For instance, in business if I do the right thing by all means and am forced to negotiate with a competitor, who is known for compromising on business ethics and values, a negotiation would lead the other person to gain undue advantage. Similarly, a government negotiating with a militant group to stop killing of innocent victims amounts to compromising its values and supporting the goals of the militants rather than controlling them.
