It was the best event I ever experienced in my life – the carnival season just started and it seemed that all the citizens got crazy at one and the same time. They drank wine, cheated on, caroused and hid everything under their masks and costumes. I decided not to fall behind and put on the most expensive clothes that I had in order to have an impressive look of a noble and admired man and one of the best wine connoisseurs. The conical cap with bells completed my costume of motley. At first I wanted to show off and visited a party of one of my dearest friends. They had free wine and some cheap drinks that I really enjoyed so I was already pretty drunk before going to the carnival.
When I got out on the street, the dulcet vortex of carnival whirled me and twirled me round. The bright colors of various masks and costumes flashed before my eyes, as I struggled my way to the center of the city through this madness. There I meant to meet my friends of the masons. Suddenly, when it was about to dusk, I saw my friend Montresor there. I liked him very much, especially after a several bottles of wine and accosted him with excessive warmth and pleasure. He seemed to be in a hurry and mentioned that he had received a pipe of Amontillado, but is not sure if it is worth the money paid. Montresor was looking for Luchresi, that arrogant ignoramus, as wanted him to have a look at his Amontillado. What a shame! Did not he know that Luhcresi cannot distinguish Amontillado from Sherry! Being a good friend and an expert in wine, I immediately offered my help and after a minute of hesitation Montresor accepted it. He just did not want to bother me in high gear of the carnival. Moreover, he worried about my health and warned about the cold and damp of his vaults – so providently on his part. I think, I underestimated this fellow before.
I was so glad to assist Montresor and merry because of the atmosphere on the streets that I even did not notice how we reached the house. Once we got in, we went down to his basement were he kept that expensive brandy. There were no lights in the house and very quiet – a great contrast to a noisy procession outside. He may have let his servants join the celebration. Montresor gave me a torch and soon we were in the vaults. I immediately felt the lack of air and a strong nitre smell. I started suffocating and, trying to catch some air with my nose and mouth, coughing. My friend offered to return, but I refused so he regaled a bottle of wine that I really enjoyed. It helped me for a moment, but as we were going deeper and deeper into the darkness it was harder to breathe. I was constantly coughing so Montresor offered me to go back again, but I refused, as I was excited and wanted to try that brandy to death.
Soon, Montresor pointed with his finger on a dark niche of the catacomb and said that Amontillado was there. Few minutes later I found myself chained to the wall and Montresor, feeling very confident, began to wall the entrance. At first I thought it was a silly joke – as carnival is a high time of foolery and madness, but then I realized that he was sealing up the wall very quickly and did not want to stop. I sobered up in one second and started to panic. The smell of nitre choked me, but I could not cough, scream or say anything. I was really scared, I couldn’t move at all and everything I heard were the beats of my heart, jingling of the bells on my hat and the sound of bricks laying one on the other.
I peered at Montresor’s face – he had an evil smile and even was satisfied. Only in that moment I understood that everything was planned from the very begging. When he surrounded me with last stone, I started to beg his forgiveness, but hearing no reply I realized that was my end.
