We cannot deny that globalization is here with us and it is touching and affecting everything around us including our sexualities. Same sex relationships have been a sensitive matter since time memorial but with the world becoming a global village most of us have been forced to deal with the matter including some states legalizing it to end the stigma. This paper is going to summarize on the same but in the context of real life same sex couples in China.
Qiaohui and Zhenzhen relationship act as a cocoon to seek solace from the other life part of marriage. As seen Zhenzen is married with a son and she does not consider herself a lala, but she describe enjoying Qiaohui company especially sexual pressure as the normal intercourse with her husband was painful, and she feared the deed every time. Zhenzen family was against her newfound solace which included a physical beating as they were against the idea. Although Qiaouhui family was against her same-sex relationships, she was more of an activist than Zhenzen. She could openly attend lala community events, unlike Zhenzen who referred to herself as a family woman.
Baozhai and Meijie relationship is seen as a perfect same sex couple. Unlike the previous couple, these two have openly accepted their status as lala and worked hard to maintain their relationship by sharing their joys, swallows and giving a helping hand when times are hard. The fact that Baozhai took care of Meijies father it is a sign that even the family members acknowledge of the same, but the couple hesitated to let their family and friends know of their relationship because of the obvious reason of rejection (Engerbretsen 10).
Huaxi and Zhilei relationship is described as an agreement or contract to benefit both of them. Even though they are female and male one being a gay man and the other one a lesbian brings out their relationship from a different perspective. Hauxi knows she has physical features of a man and with her success financially, she could afford to ignore people underneath comments she is a lesbian. Pressure from parents forced them to get married (Engerbretsen 11). Chinese society was also not on her side thus another reason not to openly come out. Zhilei seems to have a comfortable life as he travels a lot and marrying Hauxi portrays him as an opportunist too as this contract was to improve his relationship with the states to increase his scope of traveling.
In all the three relationships we see them criticizing the traditional way of how the Chinese community handles the same sex issue. Attending events or social gathering organized by the LGBT community shows a way of activism according to these couples as this takes courage to be seen with such people especially in China. With some contemplating moving to other countries where there is less stigma. This shows some action need to be taken. All this shows that there is a problem that needs to be looked into before it bursts and every nation should ensure easier life for people with special interests.
