Napoleon Bonaparte was a man with a great ambition. He killed so many people, a number that never seen before and not to be seen again for a long time. This can be said he did so for his own satisfaction. He rose to power after turbulent years of French revolution and he had the intention to bring in change. A change of a moderate authoritarian regime/government. Napoleon valued secular thought, conquest, an individual’s potential, equality, reason and freedom. All of these were granted to a citizen of his country who was subordinate to him and his ideas. He persecuted the people who questioned his authority or tried to go against him because it was a danger to his power as well as the preservation of French rights. He reflected the Enlightenment ideas by valuing freedom, reason and equality.
During Napoleon’s time some people approved his reign. He fulfilled the ideals that the people had demanded. He gave the people of France equality, freedom, justice. He helped his country economically and stabilized the currency. For these and many more the people of France loved him since he led the revolution to bring these changes that were contrary to the monarchs that were before his reign. Others loved him because he made it possible for the middle class to rise to power. To some they thought they could acquire fame, glory, freedom, liberty, riches, revenge, and power. It was through this kind of brainwashing that the people’s attitudes towards Napoleon got them to imagine what was possible if they did acquire what he promised, which therefore made them obedient and powerful especially the army.
After the September 11, 2001 attack, Americans believe that the country is safer that it was before the attack. They believe that the government has taken enough measures to protect its citizens. However, they feel that despite these measures, America is less respected in the world. The attack also has seen us affirm our attitude towards the principles of religious freedom and separation of religion from the state. Religion is important for the nation and we need to allow that freedom and rights to everyone. In other words religious discrimination is not to be allowed in the country. A number of us Americans feel that it is necessary to give up some of our civil liberties for the sake of our security. It is important that the government investigates any planned terror attacks or even threats even if it means it affects our personal privacy. There has also been some debate on the shift of some American people’s shift in attitude towards immigration and immigration policy. Some arguing that there has been an increased hostility towards foreigners.
The people who lived during Napoleon’s time had to give up some freedoms. For example, Napoleon sought to control what content was to be published and read by the people. Indeed, this was against the freedom and right for every citizen to express themselves and at the same time express themselves. Napoleon also never allowed anything that was against him to be published. Nevertheless we find that the people were fine with it as long as he was championing for what they had demanded. The people during Napoleon’s time had to live with his propaganda. He enforced his rule and his people’s subordination through education, the media, etc. He would mandate children in schools to recite verses that would proclaim that he had the divine right to rule the French people. He also proclaimed in these verses that people were obligated as French citizens to love, respect, obey and serve in the military for him. In addition, he censored the newspapers and posted many articles and ads about him, his power, and the right of the people to be subordinate to him so that he could protect the people, their rights, and freedom. Also the people during this era had to give up their religious freedom and be content with the religious authority that was cited in the catechism.
I believe a domineering government is worse than the attitudes of the people who will allow themselves to be dominated. This is because in a domineering government any vice of decent is cut off. Anybody who tries to oppose the government of the day is persecuted or imprisoned. My argument in this case is that when the attitudes of the people allow themselves to be dominated, in a sense it shows an informal democratic expression of the people. But a domineering government is more of a dictatorship.
