International students who go abroad for their education face a two-fold challenge. Like their native-born peers, they must master the subject in which they are obtaining their degree. But they must also acquire the language of their new country and learn to assimilate into its culture. For this reason, foreign-born students who enter university in an English-speaking country have a harder time than most students. This does not mean, however, that they should be held to a lower standard. A passing score on an English achievement test should be a necessary condition for their acceptance into a university, but it should not be a sufficient condition. International students must also meet the same qualifications as everyone else to be eligible for enrollment at an English-speaking school.
It should be a requirement that all ESL (English as a Second Language) students must pass the English achievement test. A student’s inability to pass such a test indicates that he or she is not prepared to receive academic instruction in English. Some of the pros of this issue are that having well-developed skills in reading, writing, and speaking English will greatly aid ESL students in their courses. Without these abilities, they will be unlikely to be able to understand their professors and will be at a higher risk of flunking out. A passing score on the English achievement test will provide a guarantee that these students are adequately prepared to learn, study, and be tested in English.
Furthermore, having good English skills will assist international students in being able to ask questions in class, approach their professors during their office hours, network with their peers, and have fulfilling social lives both within the university context and outside of it. International students who are able to communicate with other students will have a much higher chance of enjoying enriching friendships and avoiding isolation and loneliness. They will have greater self-confidence, and this will help them be able to get help when they need it, whether they need it from their residential assistants (RAs), financial aid counselors, or mental health professionals. ESL students who lack confidence in their English speaking abilities may be prevented from seeking help when they need it, which further emphasizes the importance of coming to university with proficient English skills.
Passing this test should not be the main requirement for these students to meet, however. Other students must meet a range of qualifications in order to be accepted into college, and international students should be no exception. For example, most universities in the United States require their applicants to submit their scores for standardized tests like the SAT and the ACT. They may also be required to submit scores for subject tests, like biology, physics, or history. In addition, almost every school requires students to write a letter of intent or an application essay, which is often the most harrowing part of the school admissions process for students. This is one of the cons to this issue: international students have more work to do, and must work harder, than non-international students, because they must meet all of these requirements in addition to receiving a minimum score on the English achievement test. International students must be held to the same standards as other students; however, to make sure the burden on them is fair, they should be allowed to submit their scores for tests taken in their native language.
ESL students should pass an English achievement test to qualify to attend university in English-speaking countries, but this shouldn’t be the main requirement; rather, it should be a baseline requirement. The pros to this issue include guaranteeing that these students will be able to reach their potential in school and enjoy their college experience to the max. The cons to this issue include having to work harder than native-born students and having to do more work to prove their eligibility.
