Proposal Abstract -
Prostate cancer, which is derived from the terms benign prostatic hyperplasia can be defined in a theoretical underpinning as a Health Belief Mode which elaborates its inhibitors and results. Prostate cancer has six main risk factors: Age, family history, ethnicity and race, diet, hormonal factors and environmental factors. It is a disease of the male gender. This event is basically a project seeking to identify its demographics in the South West population both in rural and urban regions. The objective of this awareness is to educate men over the ages of 50 or those with blood relatives on the importance of regular checks which include prostate-specific antigen blood test (PSA) and digital rectal exam (DRE) which ensure early prevention and its outcomes. Assessment of the risk of prostate disease in the Southwest region in men over 50 years of age will include 2 strategies: To interview participants and to complete urinary function questionnaire. Raising the awareness of early detection benefits will involve 3 strategies: Encouraging regular prostate screening/assessment, demonstrating through the use of altered prostate pathology and models and finally answering specific questions (Boehm, 2013, p. 4).
Resources related to prostate disease will be provided in the Southwest region under three strategies: Provision of a list of resources in the Southwest, provision of pamphlets for participant selection and the opportunity to interact with a survivor of prostate cancer. There will also be a Volunteer Training Session which will be geared at evaluating volunteers’ understanding and knowledge of prostate cancer, explaining the role of the volunteers’ and thanking them for their participation.
Marketing health strategies will include four items: product, price, promote, and place. Marketing of the product will entail educating men over 50 years of age on the importance of regular checks to reduce negative outcomes and ensure early intervention of prostate cancer. The venue will be at the Seniors Expo SW Center on 3rd November 2013 starting from 8am to 4pm. The event will be promoted through community announcements, local radio station advert and word of mouth and through stall banner. Prices will vary depending on the time frame for various categories: seniors, students, ECU staff, volunteers and the sports center. Evaluation of the process will include evaluating the strategies, the impact made through the objective, evaluation of the goals and assessing the value of the event and decide if the event would be repeated. The breakdown of the budget and resources adds up to a total of $21.80 for the items and quantity used (Cancer, 2010, p. 16).
Possible limitations of this proposal could be interpretations of the results as the method used in this research is quasi-experimental design. Some surveys may not be administered to everyone due to barriers caused by logistical constraints and an effort to reduce respondent burden as well. Secondly, time is a defining factor and the length of time taken to administer all the surveys to every participant could be burdensome.
