Personal Statement
Growing up in a community where children were fond of claiming that when they grew up they would be doctors or engineers had almost influenced me into taking that line of reasoning and career goal. To be more precise, that happened to be my line of pursuit for the better part of the childhood classes. By the eleventh grade, I had not quite made up my mind on what I really wanted to do. Coming from a family that owned a relatively small hotel from which we made a livelihood from, many times while out of school, I would find ample time to invest in the hotel. One day as I coordinated the day’s hotel operations, my mathematics tutor happened to visit for a meal and after careful evaluation called to me and said that I fit so well in the business world. My father was present and happened to eavesdrop on our conversation and added that he would be glad if we would be business partners in place of father and son.
That thought engulfed me as it was an eye opener and after twelfth grade enrolled in a business college where I excelled. Later on during summer holidays, I would go back with strategic plans for better operations and then I sourced for funds to open up branches in other areas with much success and increase the annual income by over 500 %.
Among the things that influenced my success was in successful realignment of the hotel and success in opening up new branches. This was made possible by my extensive academic background in research and business plan writing that aided in getting a loan that is almost completely repaid. The drive to join your institution comes mainly from successful completion of my business management course for which at present seems to be redundant due to high management skills that the chain of hotels are raising.
I would like to add more knowledge in production management, customer satisfaction, and quality control among other things. I am very instrumental in following up whatever I put my heart to pursue till its completion. In this respect the success of the business enterprise is a goal that I cannot let go. At college level, the courses offered are relatively limited and thus enrolling for a degree will give me a comprehensive coverage on what it takes to make a business successful and sustainable.
The results for the final examination are out and I have excelled. I am committed to the success of this partnership especially in providing strategic management skills. Experience in starting up a new business has taught me that I need to sharpen my skills especially in marketing. I am ready to start the course soonest possible. The advantage that I have is that I do not just have the zeal for academic excellence but also a ready market to apply whatever I learn and come up with new methods of doing things.
Looking at the prospectus of the university, it is good to note that it provides more than I have been thinking I need. My father talks regularly to me affirming that knowledge that is acquired and in the head is not like iron that putrefy but rather finds its application at the proper time. Upon completion of the course, I will embark on expanding the hotel chains to make it among the leading chains in the region and abroad.
I hail from a region that has people from different cultural background and color. In the neighborhood, there is a mix of people from Asia, Africa, Europe, and America that have lived in harmony even in trying times. It is good to note that there are cases of strife that have at times almost led to racial discrimination but the matter was later resolved. Due to such incidences, the community has appointed leaders who from time to time organize cultural events that have aided in sustenance of cultural values as well as promotion of cultural tolerance.
Coming from such a background, I have been able to interact with people from different backgrounds and this was also a boost during opening up of new branches since I had a general understanding of what people from different cultures look for and their likes and dislikes. Additionally, although it may seem like erosion of one’s culture, I have also learnt wordings from people in different neighborhood with the most influential being the Afro-American English that has different tones and pronunciation. This is a boost in starting up a chain in such a neighborhood since one can easily interact and recognize with them.
