Question 1
Behaviorists argue that children learn how to speak by imitating what they hear and this, therefore, means that they learn through conditioning. But at the same time ‘nativists’ such as Chomsky believe that people are born with an innate capacity that aid language development. This is the point at which nature and nurture can be considered. In regard to nature, people develop by way of putting to use inherited values. But then nurture dictates that it is the environment in which one live that dictates their development. When a child is exposed to the language in its natural setting, chances are that they will gain competence simply because they are exposed to the natural setting where the language is being used. On the other hand, it can be assumed that a child will have inherited language speaking skills from their parents.
Question 2
Play plays a very crucial role in the development of children. First, play acts as an arena where a child can begin to master their own behavior. This is possible in view of the fact that the child will learn to satisfy their desires and, therefore, have to learn about how to go about that. This in the long run influences character. While playing, they act out behaviors that are considered impossible under normal circumstances. Play gives a child some form of gratification for their desires by creating fantasy situations, and this leads into the formation of certain behaviors. Also, play will allow a child to separate thoughts from actions and objects with the aid of symbolic props as well as gestures. Thirdly, play will allow a child to practice self- regulation and also other skills that are not normally possible in an ideal world. This, therefore, means that play helps in the development of a child’s behavior and its influence is dependent on the games that a child plays. One such game that helps teach self- regulation and bring gratification at the same time is hide and seek.
Question 3
It is evident in the video that ADHD is a serious problem that needs to be addressed. That there are groups of people, who are promoting the use of drugs to address this problem among children, is quite true. But then there are organizations that are opposed to this. ADHD was for a very long time assumed that it was not a major problem. But then the problem became officially recognized as a disorder. Over diagnosis and conspiracy among the relevant bodies has made prescription become a serious issue because there is misuse and administration of drugs for children suffering from ADHD. This was meant to increase sales of these drugs but at the expense of these children and their families.
Question 4
If I were to be given a test on Howard Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences, my weak areas could be visual- spatial because I find it hard to think about to space. I don’t fancy drawing and reading maps or even day dreaming. My strong areas, on the other hand, include bodily- kinesthetic and interpersonal relations. This is so because I am very good at using body language and physical activity effectively. I am also very good at communicating and interacting well with others, and this could explain the fact that I have so many friends. If this was to be compared to more traditional test of intelligence, then I would measure below standard they may focus on my cognitive competencies and other areas of education
