Creative Writing using the Preinventive Form: GAP Window Display
A family of Indian descent enters the promenade in hopes of finding affordable Indian garments, but having great doubts that they will find any, as their pursuit so far has been futile. After surveying the first few shops a huge of colours surprises them, the mother becomes nostalgic as she admires the display window bright with the colours of India. Her teenage daughter gets excited when she sees the modern, fashionable clothing on the mannequins that seem to be enjoying a dance party.
The teen screams when taking a closer look at the garments, she notices a picture of her favorite Bollywood star Preity Zinta darning the same garments as the mannequin. Her mother says finally, somewhere she can purchase clothing for the entire family as she looks at the mannequins depicting an elderly couple, a nuclear family and young people dancing. She looks at her daughter all excited and says we can even buy clothes and jewelry for grandma, she sees her son steering at the child mannequin wearing a trendy kid’s shirt and asks him if he wants one. While her children admire the display, she decides to call her sister right them, telling her of the store she found, with the name GAP to the top left and the slogan “Falling for Bollywood” to the bottom right of the window. She continues to describe to her sister the wonderful display showing the Indian flag in the background and Bollywood stars for each generation.
She tells her sister of the elderly couple and the picture behind them of the old superstar Lata Mangeshkar, the mannequins depicting a nuclear family in high fashion. Her sister says, but this GAP store is dressing the various generations, from grandparents to parents and children. She jumps in at this point to agree with her sister and says it continues to today’s generation as well. They also have in the display a small group of mannequins depicting teens or young adults dancing away in the clothes you dear niece loves so much. She is day dreaming of her favorite stars Hrithik Roshan, Salmon Khan and Preity Zinta that are posted behind the mannequins. Her sister says, hold on, they have Lata Mangeshkar at the old people clothes and Salmon Khan at the young people clothes, so who is at the adult clothing? She says you will not believe but Bollywood king and queen, Shahrukh khan and Madhuri Dixit are in full portrait behind the nuclear family, it looks as if they are actually in the showcase and not just pictures.
The display brings together (like a puzzle) every aspect of the family and difference in generations with the type of clothing each mannequin is wearing, and the pictures of super stars for each generation as if filling the generation GAP. When I thought about the word puzzle, my mind began buzzing with thoughts of jig saw puzzles as I love to do those, and scrabble. I shaped this idea with the guidance of the various properties of the preinventive form, and also utilized the higher-order processes/metacomponents of ordering and organizing. As if I was doing an actual jig saw or playing scrabble, to ensure that any individual could follow my train of thought in implementing this idea. Puzzles are games and every game is solved with strategy, after looking at past GAP window displays. I wanted a unique idea, tying together the idea and the preinventive form and metacomponent focusing on a specific culture for the display. Since I realized that GAP mainly showcase what is trending in the world of western fashion, plus, I have always been intrigued by the Indian culture and seeing that GAP is an international brand this idea came to me. I also wanted my idea to utilize all or most of the properties of the preinventive form, since it allows for a better quality idea.
