I must admit that before, I was not paying much attention to the importance of reading and writing. As a result, I was not good at both of these, and I often struggle with activities relating to these two tasks. However, the course made me appreciate reading and writing more. I believe that together with this appreciation, I was also able to improve my reading and writing skills by learning more about thesis construction, identification, and the formation of outline.
First of all, I learned more about thesis in terms of reading. For instance, in my chosen reading entitled “What happens when wife earns more?”, I was able to identify the thesis or the main idea of the article: Multiple consciousness has stretched its influence into the workplace by reversing the role of breadwinner to the woman and designating the man as the one primarily responsible for domesticated duties. Before, it was not easy for me to understand the thesis of what I was reading, but after knowing how all the paragraphs can give some clue to the main idea, it becomes easier for me to know what the thesis is.
At the same time, developing a thesis was also one of the hardest parts of writing for me. Without a thesis, I would often write without direction and focus. During the course, however, I started learning about how to write a main idea and supporting details which make up a thesis statement. Little by little, it helped me make my writing clearer.
Moreover, I also learned about making an outline. The course was helpful because I learned that every paragraph must relate back to the thesis, something that I used to neglect when writing. Now, I can say that it was easier to develop my ideas with the aid of an outline.
Overall, my reading and writing skills improved a lot through the course. Specifically, my reading skills was much better because I can now identify the main idea of a piece. This is an important aspect of comprehension. In addition, I also learned how to properly write an essay and an outline which make writing easier than ever.
