The case study highlights a dispute between two employees while they were working together in an automobile parts manufacturing plant in Hamilton, Iowa, United States.
The management ordered them to learn and manage to work together or leave the organization. The two employees named Mark Lomas and Thomas Waycross started fighting with each other and one employee were seriously injured and finally he died in the hospital. The Hamilton Police arrested Thomas Waycross and charged him with a second-degree murder. The wife of Mark Lomas filed a case of negligence accusing the organization because he was killed at work.
The employees who can display violence show certain indicators like stress, excuses for not performing job well, depression, blaming others, ignorance, disagreement, verbal abuses, and tiredness. The physical assaults, arguments, alcoholic abuse, and anger related incidents are important signs of employee violence. A frustrated and psychological ill employee can turn violent immediately.
The management needs to maintain the working decorum of the organization. The management should not allow angry and violent employees to work for the company. The management should maintain rules and regulations to work and deliver the code of conduct to every employee. The management needs to arrange training and development programs and provide awareness about individual differences and sense of togetherness. The management needs to take immediate action against any illegal action.
The employees need to have patience and stay calm with an angry employee. They need to build tolerance for other people and learn to diffuse a violent situation. They should avoid misbehaving and verbal abusing and keep the situation in control. If any accident occurs then employees should inform immediately to a supervisor or other concerned authority for safety and security .
Overall, it could be stated that verbal and physical abuses are common in workplaces. However, the company should keep a strict oversight and monitor employees’ behavior to avoid problems. Moreover, employees should learn to tolerate others and avoid situations of conflict that could otherwise lead to a major damage or loss.
