Readin Reaction & Summary ( Inderstanding Intercultural Communication) Essays Examples

The article “Understanding International Communication: An Overview” was very informative and educational for me. I learned how theoretically intercultural communication is complex and multilayer. It requires not only specific background about that culture, but also very flexible and tolerable attitude of the person. I agree with most of the statements written in the article.
What I found most useful for me is the cultural components relevant to scientific studies of intercultural communication. However, I would have certainly added personality factor to that list. People belonging to a particular culture may not be limited to a mind-set cultivated from birth, relevant to that culture. People develop in an entirely different ways and possess completely unique knowledge bases. Therefore, it does not mean that Japanese businessmen will always have difficulties with American businessmen.
It is interesting that some people undermine the importance of intercultural communication, especially now in our globalized world with multilateral world order. Multiethnic, multi-religious societies are main results of vast tourist flows and intercultural exchanges after collapse of Soviet regime. Knowing how to communicate well with people from other cultures can indeed promote peace and harmony in the country, as well as between the nations. This article helped me to conceptualize the terms “communication” and “culture”, and now it became possible for me to deeply go into the heart of defining of what these words mean. In multicultural societies we always meet challenges of talking with foreigners. We fail to communicate properly, or do not get in contact simply because of non-awareness. For most of the time we are afraid of what we do not know. In order to improve intercultural communication it is necessary to deepen our knowledge in learning history, languages, and religions of other cultures.
