At a very young age, I was subjected to and was surrounded by learning materials for reading and writing. These materials include charts, books, and flash cards that my parents occasionally read out for me. By age 4, I was able to recognize the alphabet and to associate the pictures of animals with the corresponding letter. This skillset is primarily due to having repeated the same exercises every day to familiarize myself with the alphabet. However, simply learning the alphabet does not entail learning how to read. In order to say you have learned how to read, you need to be able to understand the meaning behind what it is that you were reading.
As I grew older, the exercises have stopped because I have already learned everything there is to know about the alphabet. My parents decided that I needed to play outside and have fun more due in part of how fast I learned the exercises. I grew timid because of this and when they decided to hire a private tutor to teach me how to read, I was often distracted and inattentive. I used to think of why I had to go through such an arduous task as reading when I could be having fun and playing outside with my friends. As the days pass and I did not show any progress, the tutor yelled at me to read the word. I was terrified by this but I was able to sound out what the word is. I learned how the cluster of letters would sound like but I did not really understand what it meant. The tutor praised me at that point, smiled, and told me I can actually do it if I just try.
Despite my initial reservations with reading, it has brought about and shaped a big part of my childhood. I have always been grateful to that tutor of mine whose scolding gave me a fright and jumpstarted my reading experience. It is funny to reflect on this now but at that point in my life, I was genuinely scared and frightened of not living up to my tutor’s expectations. As I said before, reading without understanding the meaning is not reading. By not knowing what it is that you are reading, then you are simply sounding the words out. Think of how if you read something in a different language without actually understands what it means. It constitutes the same idea. Even though I already learned how to sound words out, that was simply the beginning of the reading process.
Our household contains numerous books in various topics. These books range from novels, children’s books, and encyclopedias. I had to start out with picture books which are simpler and easier to read. As my vocabulary widened due to my frequent reading, I soon started to tackle harder books and even novels and children’s books. As long as the topic interested me, I would start reading it. I used to love reading about fairy tales, fantasy, and science fiction. Even though most of the time I had a hard time understanding what some words meant, it did not discourage me from trying to finish what it was I was reading as long as it was interesting. However, this does not mean that everything I did as a child was to read books all day. When the topic of what I was reading was not interesting, I did not bother trying to finish it at all even though it might have taught me more. Forcing yourself to read and comprehend something you are not interested in is something that is detrimental when it comes to learning how to read.
