Rationale:
Overall, Marcia is a confident reader. She is able to read in a natural speaking voice for most parts of the passage. She also displays the ability to correct herself whenever she pronounces a word incorrectly. She knows the word and how to say it, but her speed trips her up occasionally. She displays understanding of the words she is reading and able to express the feelings of the characters through her voice. Since she is able to comprehend word meanings quite well, her recall of the passage involves quite a lot of details. For the same reason she scores high on the comprehension exercise as well.

Rationale:
Overall Thomas is a good reader. He still reads in a quiet voice and his reading is still quite expressionless especially because he doesn’t recognize all the words. It breaks his rhythm and he is unable to go back to speaking naturally. He also does not apply self-correction often. He reads through or reads past the words he doesn’t recognize. This hampers his overall recall of the passage. Although he understands the action in the passage, he struggles with pronouncing some of the words. Since he is able to understand what is happening in the passage, he is able to answer comprehension questions with accuracy.
Comparison of Marcia and Thomas
Marcia clearly displays more word recognition when compared to Thomas. She reads faster than Thomas and in natural speaking voice for most of the passage. She has very good expression. Thomas struggles with words more than Marcia. It breaks his rhythm and he starts to read quietly because he is not sure of the words. Marcia’s word recognition allows her to understand the passage better. Her word recognition is apparent in the fact that she self-corrects more often than Thomas. Thomas struggles in the middle of the passage. However he understands the narrative which is apparent in his ability to answer the comprehension questions as well as Marcia did. But he is unable to recognize the repeating theme in the passage and his overall pace is slower than Marcia’s. Marcia has an erratic pace at times, she reads very fast in some places especially when she recognizes a repeated word or phrase. She needs to be shown how to read at an even pace with her already high level of expression. Thomas needs more help with word recognition; if that is addressed all other aspects of his reading should improve.
Rationale for How You Rated Each Student
For each student, write a rationale for why you rated him/her the way you did on the Retelling. Provide evidence from the students’ reading.
Comparison of the Reading of Two Students

How did the students differ in word recognition?
How did the students differ in reading fluency?
How did the students differ in reading comprehension?
What were some of the notable strengths and weaknesses of each student in reading?
What are some areas in which each student needs instruction?
What you will upload into the dropbox in Springboard
(1) Audio recording and transcription of each student’s oral reading, retelling and response to the reading comprehension questions.
(2) Scored rubrics for both students.
(3) completed template with information on each student’s reading performance and comparison of both students in terms of word recognition, fluency, and reading comprehension.
