Some people would say that delayed transition to adulthood is a poor decision. Individuals argue that it puts people behind, mentally, in relation to how they are supposed to function in society. However, there are other people who would say that it is a double-edged sword. The reason people would argue this, is because when an individual has a delayed transition to adulthood, they get to explore more of who they are. Moreover, the reading “The Longest Decade” expands upon this as well. What it says about delayed transition to adulthood, is that giving time for individuals to discover their own adulthood, and not go by what society says, is the proper benefit and standard that should be abided by.
One of the strongest examples that the reading gives, is in age range. It discusses how when a young man is thirteen, they are often considered an “adult” in society. However, by other definitions and standards, the boy is merely a teen who needs to discover themselves before they truly become independent. The reason this mindset would be beneficial in society, as well as a double-edged sword, is because it would not be going by what society influences others to think. Therefore, I see prolonged adolescence as a benefit to society and not harmful. Now, while most of society is against this mindset, what they need to do, is encourage a more positive thinking towards prolonged adolescence. Ways that this could be implemented would start off small. For example; people could go around the streets, doing surveys on prolonged adolescence. There, they would have individuals share their thoughts and feelings on the issue at hand. Moreover, by collecting this data, people would be better able to understand why individuals are against pro-longed adolescence, instead of the reason simply being black and white. Now lastly, for adolescents, they should support society by representing the age that they are at. At the same time, though, they should also realize that while getting older means becoming more independent, surrounding oneself with a positive group of people is also a benefit to adolescence and transitioning into an adult.
