The following questions pertain to:
George, S., & Thomas, S. (2010). Lived experience of diabetes among older, rural people. Journal of Advanced Nursing, 66(5), 1092-1100.
What is the purpose of this research?
It is allowing insulin dependent diabetics expression of their experiences adopting the self-care management process.
What is the research question (or questions)? This may be implicit or explicit.
The implicit research question could read, what are the most appropriate self-care models suitable of elderly insulin dependent diabetics.
Did the authors describe the research design of this study? If so, give a description.
The research design in this study consists of a qualitative unstructured interview methodology. The actual design was one in which clients/pateints were drawn through a purposive sampling method. The method was influenced by a French philosopher Merleau-Ponty Maurice. It is designed to gather experiences. Responses from nterviews were recorded and analysed.
Describe the population (sample) for this study.
The population for this study consisted of elderly insulin dependent diabetic patiens/clients. They were English speaking persons
Was the sample adequate for the research design that was selected?
It could be considered adequate since it was purposevie representing the entre population. The sample was drawn from local agencies between January and May 2005.
Describe the data collection procedure.
The data collection process was conducted using unstructured intervews and recording reposnses obtained from paients /cleints. It was conducted face to face in patient’s homes at a time and date agreed upon by the researcher and paticipant.
How were the data analyzed after collection?
Data was analyzed through a process applyng tenets of existential phenomenology. It is conducted by bracketing the biases a researcher has concerning the topic being investigated. Precisely, the nanalysis procedure encompassed a systematic, disciplined, and reflective in-depth evaluation. Interviwes were audiotaped and transcribed word for word.
Discuss the limitations found in the study.
The limitation lies in the design itself. While unstructured interview lends itself to a wider range of responses. As such, much extraneous data could be retrieved from the process. Also, the analysis of data could be more complicated. However, the authors mentioned that the study design being phenomenological could initself be interpreted as a limitation, but small sample do not always offer limitations. Rather, it is understanding of data which carries the most study limitations.
Discuss the authors' conclusions. Do you feel these conclusions are based on the data that they collected?
These authors concluded that the uniqueness of this study was it being the first one offering a first person’s perspective of self management of elderly insulin dependent diabetic patients. Definitely, but they were objective enough to say that more reseach on the subject is needed based on the sample selected and ages of respondents.
10)How does this advance knowledge in the field?e
This advances knowlwede in public health as well as the preventative sphere of healthcare intervention. For example, to be insulin dependent at an older age could be challenging if complications have already begin to develop. This study will give perspectives on more meaningful ways the elderly population can safely participate in their care.
The following questions pertain to:
Hunt, C., Sanderson, B., Ellison, K., (2014). Support for diabetes using technology: A pilot study to improve self-management. MedSurg Nursing, 23(4), 231-237.
11).What is the purpose of this research?
This was focused on improving self management of people diagnosed with diabetes. Specifically, the authors contend that their main aim was determining how effective was the use of technological applications on Apple® iPad®, which support diabetes self-management.
What is the research question (or questions)? This may be implicit or explicit.
The implicit research question can be perceived as, to what extent can technology help support persons in their self-management of diabetes?
Did the authors describe the research design of this study? If so, give a description.
Yes, they said that it was a pilot study using a two group crossover technique as well as a repeated mmeasured design. Experts from the health program placed the information concening the study on flyers at the center. A supportive email blast explaining the study along with the researchers contact information was communicated to all employees enrolled in the health program. The inclusive criteria were all T2DM, age 19 or older, as well as being literate in English language.
Describe the population (sample) for this study.
Participants were obtaied from the diabetics and nutrition center employee health group situated at a local medical center in a Southeast urban area.
Was the sample adequate for the research design that was selected?
For a pilot project the sample can be considered adequate even though these projects can be extentsive when large groups are involved. Twenty people were enrolled, which can be considered small for a normal pilot project; however, still enough for this particular study.
Describe the data collection procedure.
Study informational flyers were placed to the center. Further, an email blast was sent to all enrolles in the program employed at the center. This email fully described the program. Sixty (60) people were contacked but 20 enrooled in the study. The study proposal was discussed and approval obtained. A primary investigator condcted the data collection process by meeting with participants.Study details were explained. Prticipants expected to participae in the stugy were offered information concerning hat the study was about. The concent form was signed by all those selected to participate in the study. A1C values were obtained from participants by diabetes and nutrition center staff. Researchers documented the results. Paricipants logged their behaviors everyday. A control group was used and their behaciors were logged also.
How were the data analyzed?
This took the form of three types of measurements namely, pre-intervention, mid-intervention and post-intervention. Descriptive statistics were utilized in analyzing AIC values and demographic data. Pre-test and post-test self-efficacy and diabetes self-management behaviors measurements were analyzed applied through a mixed model variance analysis of the group.
Discuss the limitations found in the study?
Researchers identified that pilot projects in themselves have their own limitations refarding time management of the study. Some participants may not complete the entire program. Besides in this particular study study participants encountered difficulty in chart and tracking their self efficacy behaviors. This could greatly compromise accuracy of results displayed in the statistical calculations
Discuss the authors' conclusions. Do you feel these conclusions are based on the data that they collected?
They indeed were based on the data received and analysed, because the analysis process ensured that accurate conclusions were drawn. For example, descriptive statistics were applied in understanding of data retrieved. This measurement is very acurate. Researchers were able to conduct calculations in arriving at their results and conclusions.
How does this advance knowledge in the field.
It was identified that with the current diversity in diabetes self- management, technology plays a very important role in facilitating procedures, which must be conducted such as glucose test monitoring. Diet and exercise are two issues dibetics struggle ith and technology will facilitate this aspect of the management.
