President Reagan’s “Berlin Wall” speech that he delivered on June 12, 1987, was a mark in the history urging the people of Berlin and other Eastern nations to look within and support for freedom and peace opposing the Berlin wall. The speech made a huge impact on the gathering. Reagan was known to be a very effective communicator; maybe it was his background as an actor that made him so persuasive and credible. During his speech he adopted the persuasive tone and showed hope for people by using German phrases in his speech to show people that he respects their culture and language. He started with a favorable tone by talking positive things about Germany and its people and through his speech gave ethos citing examples and facts (Skoniecki 18). Reagan in his speech discussed the current Soviet status, including media freedom and reforms in Moscow. He stressed the importance of democracy and forecasted that either Soviet Union must change or perish, a statement which can be termed as negative. After this, he urged Mr. Gorbachev to take every possible step towards bringing the wall of Berlin down. People were not sure about the consequences of the Reagan’s speech in U.S but once delivered whosoever heard him was explained. When the President said, "Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall”, the statement symbolized the end of the cold war because Reagan truly believed that the step taken would help in removing the communism (Madison 2012). He directly called upon Mr. Gorbachev to take a stand and save the Soviet Union from the evils of communism. Is the cold war over? It is a question which seeks its answer in the files of nuclear missile shield projects in the European continent which Russia see as a threat. So in a way the cold war is still on and the world still needs a leader like Reagan to give persuasive rhetoric speeches making its mark.
