It seems that in modern world the border between reality and the world of fantasy is not so clear as it used to be. It happens quite often that people exaggerate in the humanity. In fact, exaggerating could be seen on various levels. The most obvious examples are art, books and movies. However, the main question is why people tend to exaggerate? In general, it is possible to talk about the two main reasons of exaggerating that are the desire to seek ideals and to escape from reality.
First of all, it is important to mention that people often exaggerate in the humanity as they seek ideals. People always want to reach perfection no matter what they are doing. It concerns their hobbies and interests, work and even appearance. They always want to be the best and to achieve excellence. It is a part of human’s nature. As a result, the desire to become ideal finds itself in art. For instance, when considering classic art, it is clear that painters and sculptors often tried to achieve ideal forms so as to make beautiful models. They tried to be very accurate while making the forms and shapes and always tried to achieve perfect proportions. This tradition continues to exist at present time as well. For instance, while making characters for movies, people often tend to exaggerate by making the major characters ideal and beautiful both outside and inside. The same thing happens to most of the famous books. Many authors prefer to make ideal characters with perfect traits of character. Such characters never make mistakes and are always right. The painters depict models of stunning beauty with perfect facial and body features. So, all these examples suggest that people are in constant search of ideal. On the one hand, the desire to become ideal is beneficial. Thus, it contributes to personal achievement and self-development. It makes people to constantly work on themselves and to seek for the best. On the other hand, people seem to forget that they are not ideal. Each person has one’s strong points and weak points. Moreover, constantly struggling in order to become ideal, many make people feel disillusioned and devastated. It can negatively affect their self-esteem. It is also possible to suggest that people understand that ideals do not exist in real life. They understand that each person has one’s own weaknesses. That is the main reason why these people are so eager to depict perfect people in various books, magazines and movies.
It should be also noted that in many cases people exaggerate because they are not satisfied with reality and want to escape from it. For instance, nowadays there are a lot of movies about superheroes. In fact, the number of such movies continued to grow. Superman, Spider-Man, Batman – it is impossible to count all these names. In such movies the directors usually portray men with supernatural abilities and possibilities. Each of their characters has special power with the help of which one can change the world. It is clear that by making such characters, the directors exaggerate a lot. In fact, they create a totally different world. The society seems to like such movies. They help them to escape from reality and routine. Such movies distract people from their everyday problems. When people are not satisfied with their lives they prefer to immerse into the world of fantasy. It is possible that such people understand that the characters of the heroes from various books and movies are exaggerated. However, being unsatisfied with what they have, they still prefer the world of fantasy, even though it is overly exaggerated. They view it as a perfect escape.
