I chose the Positive Psychology Perspective on Body Image and the Sociocultural Perspective on Human Appearance and Body Image for this assignment because I consider that these two adequately describe the common reasoning behind body image appreciation in modern society.
Among the aspects that I find most interesting or accurate is the notion introduced by the Positive Psychology Perspective contends that a low negative body image does not equal a positive body image. If one is not dissatisfied with one’s body, this does not necessarily imply that one thinks positively about oneself, but could simply create a neutral body image. In consideration, positive body image should be promoted for people to celebrate and honor their bodies. Regarding the Sociocultural Model, it establishes a valid point that most people could identify themselves with: society imposes a series of ideals that, though considered unattainable, are still internalized and able to generate feelings of dissatisfaction.
The aspects I find most challenging are the recommendations to encourage or promote a positive body image, as they may appear simple to perform through a reading, but can prove to be much more difficult in real life. Completing the transition from a negative body image to a positive one can be challenging for a person. Moreover, the sociocultural ideals are so ingrained in people’s minds that internalizing they are impossible for most and being able to only seek to be the best version of oneself, in spite of media promotion of ideal bodies and influences from family and friends can also be a challenging task.
