Reducing Problem Behaviour
Functional communication training, referred to as FCT, is among the most trusted procedures for dealing with severe behaviour problems. Carr and Durand described the treatment process in the publication, which has helped in evaluating and developing new treatment methods. The paper will review and tackle the procedures used in the treatment process and determine the credibility of each step. In essence, the paper will discuss and review the research methods employed by Carr and Durand will be considered and determine how the use of these methods can produce likely results.
The study design in this experiment meets the standards of scientific merit scale. Carr and Durand created two tests. In experiment one, the assessment was thorough and played a whole part in determining the situations where behavioural expressions, as well as accidents such as self-injury, could occur. Experiment two thoroughly identifies the methods that can be used in placement of behaviour among the children. The two design methods ensured that both non-disabled and physically challenged children were considered (National Autism Centre, 2014).
In the quality of dependent measures, Carr and Durand ensured that children chosen for the activity represented the greater part of the society. They used four children who were diagnosed with developmental disabilities (Carr, 1985). By using the vocal response from the children to the teacher, they were able to determine the problem behaviour among the children. The results of this research were adequate for the four children who prove that it is a comprehensive strategy for any population. Thus, the reliability level is IOA≥90%.
The evidence of fidelity of this research is evident as the results of the four children which were subjected to the study depicted a "pass" for the test. Acquisition of the vocals brought the substantial reduction in the behavioural problems of these children. The implementation accuracy is ≥80 percentage (National Autism Centre, 2014).
The results of the experiment depicted that the treatment process used involving a differential reinforcement of the functional communication produced results which were common in four children showing its reliability in any given set of children (Durand, 2011). Hence, the data is objective according to SMRS national standards scale, and the data maintenance is to point. A sequential predictability of the data is desirable in any given situation for a quality research (National Autism Centre, 2014).
The results of this research are well distributed showing the credibility of FCT interventions. The results revealed that eighty-one of the individuals had autism (Carr, 1985). The individuals who were not diagnosed with a mental problem were found to have traumatic injuries in their brain; these were three cases (Carr, 1985). Another three of the participants were found to have attention deficit disorder, while another three cases were diagnosed with speech delays.
This study can be used in schools to determine students who want attention due to problematic behaviour. By using Functional communication training, the results can be applied to any institution as the results are independent of the subject and apply to various groups. The results can be used to group different individuals according to their problem behaviour.
In conclusion, the FCT is an effective method for diagnosing children with problematic behaviour. Research design can lead to likely results if the method used is extensive and a representation of any other particular population. The quality of dependent measure is an essential element of this process, and the researcher needs to identify various tests as well as other behavioural observations to give a credible outcome. The data should indicate high levels of fidelity so that it can be adopted in any form of study and maintain its credibility in other studies. The quality of participants used should adhere to independent confirmation of the independent members of research. The research and experiment should be cultural independent, as the study has to be made in a way it can apply anywhere.
