1. The effective and ineffective cycles are similar in some ways, although they have opposite effects. What are the similarieties? What are the effects of each? Share your personal experiences with both of these cycles.
The effective cycle occurs when the manager has confidence in the performance of the employees. Minimal supervision is applied since he acknowledges the aptitude of employees doing a magnificent job and this result in higher performance levels because the employees feel cherished and valued; while in the case of ineffective cycle, the manager may use force and set rules to be followed by employees their by limiting their decision making that could have been of paramount importance to the company. The employees respond by giving back very little since their creativity and rights are controlled (violated).
Similarities of the two cycles are clearly depicted from the above information that the manager will fulfill his objective by either adopting ineffective or effective cycle-high performance or lower performance. From my personal experience, when the manager tries to control my creativity, I will not perform to my potential since I will feel demotivated or as a failure who cannot make wise decisions independently- like an animal which has to be controlled. When motivated, I would do my best for the success of the company since I feel as part and parcel of the company.
2. Your business has announced that they will be closing one of three distribution centers. As the manager of the largest of these centers, you know that your employment, employees will be concerned about their future. Discuss how you would apply Lewin’s change process to get them to buy into this change.
Lewin is a qualified physicist- talks of transforming ice to water and later freezing that water into ice (a continuous cycle) that is one of the best theories behind the change process. The business resolution to close one of the three centers will hoist negative apprehension to the employees since this action poses a good reason for anyone to be concerned and worried about. I would first come up with ways that would help the employees in identifying the change, after identifying the change and the importance of that change, I would create ways that would handle concerns and qualms of the employees thereby leading them into the change. By physically representing myself instead of texting or emailing them, I would communicate regularly with them so as to bring about the benefits that the business will have after implementing that change. Encouraging those employees interested in working in the other centers to apply for work with them and all the employees to be prepared for any outcome as a result of the decision taken-closing one of the center.
3. Contrast and compare the directive change cycle with the participative change cycle and identify when you would choose each of these.
The participative change cycle is implemented when new knowledge is made available to the individual of the group while the directive change cycle is said to begin when change is imposed on the entire organization. In both cycles, it is clearly depicted that they are both outcomes of carrying out change. In order to bring participative change into existence, you have to introduce new knowledge, meaning that there is introduction of change as a result of the introduction of the new knowledge as is the case for directive change.
In participative cycle-after implementing new knowledge-it is hoped that individuals will accept the new information meaning that the individuals are to willingly accept or reject the change, unlike in the case of directive change where change may forcefully be applied and the individuals are left with no options but to accept the change.
I would implement participative change cycle in a society that is both civilized and understand the benefits of that change in the long run, but the directive change cycle would work best in a rebellious organization-people who are not willing to accept change.
