In Teaching Aliens to Talk John Calderazzo talks about how people tend to ignore things like climate change. The ones who choose to see things only look at the issue long enough to sign a petition or throw money at the problem. Most people do not understand the science behind climate change. This is why there is a large percentage of people who do not believe that it even exists. One of the reason that many people do not have any interest in climate change is the way that it is presented in lectures. Many scientists speak in what Calderazzo calls the “voice of science” this is a slow, monotone, emotionless tone.
Jeff Turrentine the author of True Believer talks about passing Church Row in Lubbock Texas and seeing all of the churches lined up. Once one hits the border of Lubbock the churches while still great in number look as though they have been quickly thrown together. The Reverend of the church does not dress or act the way one associates with church leaders. Reverend Farley is also a firm believer in climate change. The problem is, when church leaders address the issues of climate change many people use the Bible to justify the state of the climate, ecology, etc.
In Climate Change as Background Noise by Kari Marie Norgaard which is a chapter in her book “Living in Denial: Climate Change, Emotions, and Everyday Life”. Norgaard talks about how the United States government refuses to acknowledge the threat of global warning, despite warnings from a number of scientists. Many members of the federal government do not believe that it exists, so they are reluctant to pass any legislation in regards to climate change.
