The first semester in college is one that can be characterized with many changes both in my academic and personal life. At the back of my mind, I knew that I was to study a selected course, but little did I know the challenges, insights and lessons that would take place in my course of study. I had different instructors in the course of the semester all of whom were dedicated to introducing me to the college study life and provide me with informative tactic to ensure my success. To begin with, I enrolled for a communication’s skills and critical thinking class. My thoughts at first were: who does not think in their everyday life? Who does not communicate every day? I wondered why the institution offered such obvious skills as courses. However, over the semester, my questions have been answered by myself to myself. Communications skills class has been important citing the knowledge of writing in different formats and sentence construction. I am also knowledgeable that writing has to be arranged in a certain order to enable the reader understand the points that I am trying to put across. In conducting research, I know that not all information contained in websites and blogs is credible. I have to research far and wide from books, consultation with instructors and trusted internet site. When I get to use someone else’s information, I have to cite them in the reference page as well as in the text. Furthermore, writing must be done in my own words in order to avoid plagiarism.
My unique contribution to my research is that I know how to write better following my capacity to revise and rethink ideas that I am jotting down. Communication skills also enabled me learn good grammar that enable my writing be more accurate and understandable. I must also mention that I am able to use the same tense throughout my essay. Furthermore, in trying to compose an argumentative essay, my critical thinking skills come in handy as I carefully analyze what different authors are trying to put across. I get to choose the best alternative idea out of the many ideas derived from research sources.
I wish to mention that, over the course of the semester, there is nothing I would like to do over because, after all, it was a learning process that I have come to greatly appreciate. Nobody is perfect, but I would like to clarify that I have developed and will continue to develop into a great thinker, reader and writer. The aspect of group work also played a unique role in my study as I have known how to appreciate everyone’s idea for it offered support in the general understanding of a given academic concept. I made academic friends with the same aspiration as I; to get the most out learning, in order to be responsible members of the society determined to also guide others grow academically and socially.
