5DPP – In this module, I was able to pick up the basics of what is expected of an HR professional, getting a good grasp of the fundamentals of human resources. This is vital for professional development, as I need to make sure that I understand my role as an HR rep within my own corporate context, and know my skills so that I can work to improve them.
5BIC – This module provided me with important insight into how to manage contemporary business issues both from within and without the company, particularly as they pertain to HR. I know that it is important to form strategies and know the best ways to implement them, and so I hope to utilize concepts like vertical and horizontal integration into my own work. With these principles, I firmly believe I can create more actionable HR solutions for pressing issues within my own organization.
5RTP – This module was extremely helpful in that regard, allowing me to see how important labour market conditions can be, and the differences between varying recruitment and selection methods. Most important to me was the elements of employee retention, as I do my best in my work to ensure that there is room for everyone – retaining good talent is fundamental to the operation of a good business, and so that is something I try to focus on as much as possible. If I cannot hold onto employees, however, I do feel better equipped to deal with redundancy and dismissals with this module than ever before, given the best practices advocated in the module.
5IHR – This module taught me the best way to develop as an HR representative, learning the best ways to use online resources and small-scale research to investigate an HR issue and come to the best solution. All too often, I find myself relying solely on my own instincts and understanding of my own corporate culture, when I could have better outcomes with the analysis of best practices. I hope to incorporate these principles into my own work in the future.
5MHR – This unit provided me with some fantastic tools with which to better manage HR functions within a corporate context. Overall, I feel supremely capable of understanding the ways HR operates in different business contexts, and navigate the various ethical and professional dilemmas that come through in the profession in very specific ways.
5ELW – in this module, I learned a great deal about how employment regulation is performed through the courts system, thus necessitating the use of lawful and ethical practices when dealing with employees’ employment, pay and performance. Change management is an issue I sometimes wrestle with, as I find it difficult to deal with conflicts that stem from systemic change in the organizational structure of my company; however, this module in particular has given me a strong, helpful outlook on the best ways to create smoother transitions from one setting to another within an organization. Perhaps the most challenging assessment activity I dealt with in that module was the issue of bullying and discrimination in the workplace (activity 5). I have never had to deal with open discrimination and harassment that required such severe consequences in a workplace before, and so thinking about how to do that in a workplace setting was extremely stressful. However, this was a pivotal moment in my education on human resources, as I have to be prepared to handle any kind of issue that comes my way, no matter how inconvenient or uncomfortable. As a human resources manager, not only do I have to look out for the company’s interests, but the welfare and well-being of my colleagues. This specific activity forced me to consider all angles in a more assertive way than I ever have before, and I will absolutely bring that assertiveness back to my burgeoning career in human resources.
5EEG – In this module, I learned a great deal about the importance of employee engagement, particularly as it relates to positive corporate outcomes. I now know to focus greatly on creating an engaged corporate culture, as it allows for greater productivity and more positive outcomes for workers wanting to feel comfortable and fulfilled in their positions. As an HR rep, I know the importance of making sure employees feel at home and secure in their work, and so I hope to do more in my own career to facilitate an engaged workforce.
5HRD - In this module, I learned about the “HR Agenda,” letting me understand how HR works in management structures, contributes to accountability, and makes organizations more effective. Shaping and developing HR strategies will be much more easy and detailed, with many of the techniques and tools taught in this module being folded into my existing practices. In particular, I hope to include more vertical integration into our HR environment, as I believe that will aid in efficiency and employee retention. Furthermore, I feel better able to handle changes in business planning and implementing plans within my organization.
