I will write about the family, which is a social institution that its success in socializing its members can result to a social change in the context of human resource, economic empowerment, spiritual empowerment and success of the society. Poor parenting creates members of the society who are poorly socialized.
In the family set up, there are parents, siblings and relatives. In most cases, the father is the head of the family who liaises with the mother in rearing the children. They have a great responsibility of transmitting values to their children to fit in the society. Family forms the basis of socialization. Parents must provide their children with tools of communication. Teaching the appropriate language and behavior is crucial in fostering socialization. The children usually learn through repetition of cues, cautions, rewards and punishments, which make them avoid incorrect moves. The children at their early age are strongly attached to their mother who molds them on behalf of the society. The mother ought to have enough time to reinforce proper morals. The parents have a duty to behave well since the children minds are very tender with little ability to tell between evil and good, thus can be easily corrupted. This is detrimental because it may make a child become a social misfit. Parents should empower children with essential information that would enable them develop psychologically and emotionally. The children should be made aware of their physical state and their spiritual needs. Adolescents should be made to uphold their spiritual needs that could help them avoid conflict and disagreement with adults. This age requires a high parental control. There is the need of preparing them for adulthood, its responsibilities and roles such as parenthood, marriage, occupation, careers and other obligations in the wider society. Parents must also teach aesthetic values to mold their children, making them appreciate various situations.
Parent’s behavior provides a role model to the children. The children tend to copy almost everything they do since they lack the ability to participate in human activities in the society. Children are also helpless and have low knowledge of the idea of socialization. Parents should lead their children to socialize appropriately. Since socialization is a life-long process which begins at birth and continues throughout one’s life. Parents should always be flexible to allow children learn from them since children are constantly adjusting their behavior to meet social expectations. Parents should often send their children to other important social training institutions to acquire appropriate culture. However, children should be restricted on the programs that they watch since mass media can destroy their morals. Furthermore, they should also be restricted in the clubs and other social places that can affect their morale negatively. Sending children to schools is essential for the betterment of their future since school is a mid-wife for change of any generation.
Financial constraints and the level of education have the potential of limiting the success of the family institution. People’s level of education and occupation influences activities that they engage in as society is divided into positions based on one’s income, prestige and political power. The family should strive to educate its members so as to give them a better position in the society. This will make them feel comfortable while interacting with other members of the society.
In conclusion, parents should be good examples for their children to emulate. Parents should understand each of their children potential never to discriminate them based on their capabilities since they are differently gifted. The upbringing of the children will determine their future. They should be able to identify different talents from their children and help them to strengthen them, thus benefiting them. This highlights that proper utilization of the family institution is essential in established a highly socialized community.
