In the chapter “Relationship Versus Task Orientation,” it states that there is a clear distinction between hot- and cold- climate cultures within the work environment. While the hot- climate is based on relations between people, the cold-climate is oriented around tasks. Hot-climate communication is centered on promoting an inviting atmosphere, albeit most often on a superficial level. In cold-climate communication, however, the truth is favored over peaceable relations. It is rarely about the person, and is rather focused just on the task at hand. Personal issues are in a different category than objective issues. In relation to my current circumstances as a non-immigrant in the U.S., I realized that our personalities are just one factor of how we behave in our culture. The hot versus cold climate of our environment largely dictates whether we will focus on our personal relations over objective issues, or the other way around.
Something new that I learned about myself and the culture in Seattle is that I am a hot-climate type of person. Even though Seattle is a generally cold and gray city, I have learned to view even strangers as simply friends that I haven't met yet, and I certainly do not judge them based on where they came from. I did not realize that there are so many nuances to how we communicate with one another depending on these hot versus cold climates, and I appreciate the ability to speak to anyone first as a human being, with kindness and warmth, and to make the objective of the conversation the second priority. This makes everyone worthwhile for me.
