Explain what you think is meant by the statement in the podcast that in Judaism, What you believe follows only after what you do. Explain why you think the Jewish customs described in the podcast are being rediscovered?
Judaism is a religion that is practised by the Jewish people and is based on the Hebrew bible. It is a monotheistic religion that is based on the promises that God, Yahweh, made to the children of Israel during the time of Moses (Yaacov, 2009). It is not a homogenous religion as it is made up of different Jewish groups that interpret the Hebrew bible differently.
The Jewish religion is based on the belief of God’s commandments and living a life that shows that one honours them. The statement that, what you believe follows only after what you do, means that it is not all about believing in God and having faith in his ability but it is about the actions we do (Kosofsky, 2012). How we behave and how treat others is much profound and important than simply having faith and not acting on it. We are all children of God and he has a purpose for every one of us, we should help each as brothers and sisters to achieve our true goal while still keeping our faith strong God. Our faith is more of our actions than what we declare to believe in.
The Jewish customs are being rediscovered because the podcasts gives the teaching, beliefs and practises of the Jewish religion. It shows how modern man can still be attached to his religion through his everyday actions (Kosofsky, 2012). The Jewish customs is greatly attributed to prayer, at least three times a day; there is the belief that as a Jew religion should be part of your everyday life, the podcast has showed how a busy New Yorker can still have time to incorporate their faith in life. The podcast also has the exception of new members of the religion. It focuses on the very basics of becoming a Jew and how to maintain your Faith as time goes on.
This is a great step in the right direction; this is because currently we are in a digital generation where people want to access everything on line. The podcast ensure that the digital Jew can access his daily prayer and readings on line as he is going on in his life. This has brought the religion closer to the people and a new and better avenue has been established. This is because it can easily be incorporated into our everyday life.
