Question 1
The decision to make Coach Boone the head coach was appropriate. One of his major strongholds was that he did not tolerate any bad behavior or false claims from his players or team members (Bruce, 2011). His aim was to ensure both schools have a good social interaction amongst themselves if they seek to make their time and effort valuable in the end. These are what define corporate social responsibility. A good social and economic environment yields better grounds to its people. Achieving such standards requires a person to think further than their individual interest and work together for better profits (Bruce, 2011). The role played by Coach Boone shows great examples of a leader with good CSR skills.
Businesses benefit greatly from CSR in various ways. It brings success to their efforts since everyone works towards making the company better than its competitors (Osman, 2015). Such achievements are possible through the encouragement of social license and shared value. Businesses abroad require proper mitigation and management of environmental and social risk factors in their portfolio to boost their presence in foreign countries. In relation to the movie, Coach Boone had to look for a solution to segregation among the players. The white players chose to drive on one bus while the black players drove on the other (Osman, 2015). Hence, he had to look for mitigating social factors that would bring the team together. He ordered the front line players to drive on one bus while the back line players on the other one.
Coach Boone had to do his best in making the teamwork together since his life depended on their win. He knew most of the people who doubted his skills would eventually shame him if he were to lose the championship (Bruce, 2011). However, his win did not matter because of his race but the obsession most coaches have when it comes to football. Such kind of qualities helps a company to progress further. Despite the odds present, one has to think of the outcome. It requires one to remove themselves from their comfort zone and factor in other properties when it comes to proving their ability to complete the task at hand (Osman, 2015). Being an inferior being does not qualify one to claim they cannot make changes in the corporate world.
Another trait Coach Boone shows sacrifice and dedication to his team. He suffered negative treatment from the all-white neighborhood upon arrival in Alexandria (Osman, 2015). Most of his neighbors used to diminish him by uttering hateful words and offering to buy him out since they did not want him there, however, he stood his ground and did not fight back. His mission was to coach football and try his level best to outdo previous head coaches. Such traits show the seriousness of a person whose aim is to overcome the odds in life (Osman, 2015). A good business flourishes due to the sacrifice its employees put when it comes to fulfilling their mandate. At times, one might feel alone or out of place, making them doubt their reason to be in the place. Their goal should not be looking for ways to fit in but to stand out.
Question 2
Coach Yoast was a calm and respected leader in the community, which made him a good candidate for the head coach. However, he became the assistant to Coach Boone, a move that he did not anticipate and was reluctant in picking the job (DeLeeuw, 2015). He received several offers from other schools and community teams. However, he obliged to the choice made by the institutions and worked together with Coach Boone. Most of the white folks could not believe his move and wondered why he would allow such a shame to befall him. Just like Coach Boone, his heart was towards the team and anyone who seeks to make it better than its current state (DeLeeuw, 2015). With time, Titus approached him to plot a way of kicking out Coach Boone and take up his position.
His major ethical dilemma was to stab Coach Boone in the back and take up his place. In the beginning, their relationship was not good. He had his set of leadership traits and moves, which Coach Boone was against (Purman, Nichols, Moore, & Siwinski, 2015). At one point, Coach Boone confronts him to establish who was in charge between the two. With time, Coach Boone’s leadership skills were evident in the team interaction and consecutive wins. He learns of the move by referees to forfeit Coach Boone’s matches as a way of showing solidarity among to the decisions made by the other white folks (Purman, Nichols, Moore, & Siwinski, 2015). Coach Yoast is in a dilemma of whether to join his colleagues in the fight against Coach Boone or stand his ground.
These two events show the leadership skills present in Coach Yoast. Despite his color, he knows that what matters the most is his team, and he will continue to support anyone with similar visions such as Coach Boone (Purman, Nichols, Moore, & Siwinski, 2015). A true leader should not succumb to external pressure, which seeks to break the efforts of making major strides in a company or organization. One should ensure the goals and vision of the company outweigh any negative forces that their colleagues or executives seek to support. In conclusion, the movie exhibits great leadership skills by Coach Boone and Coach Yoast. Such traits are important in ensuring progress in a company or organization.
