With the ever increasing amounts of CO2, SO2 and NO2 being emitted in to the atmosphere, global warming has continued to heighten prompting scientists to opt for a new source of energy that predominantly aims are excluding factories that produce a lot of fumes that are known to compound the problem of global. Professedly, there are several sources of energy that can be used by humans even though most of the sources have not been explored. Top in the list of sources of energy that have been explored by scientists is the use of renewable energy. Shi (2010) while defining renewable energy asserts that renewable energy is energy generated from natural resources and can be used repeatedly. Ideally, renewable energy, apart from being overly environmentally friendly, is reliable and above all, cannot be exhausted. For instance, the sun is a renewable source of energy which, despite its ability to provide energy that can meet up to 80% of human energy needs, has not been adequately utilized by human beings. Other sources of renewable sources of energy that have not been fully explored are wind, organic residues and tidal energy generated from tidal forces. However, it cannot pass without mentioning that renewable energy, despite promising a global-warming-free living environment, is not available everywhere. Another notable disadvantage of renewable energy is that the harnessing of renewable energy requires high upfront investment coupled with high maintenance costs. This paper, by focusing majorly on solar and wind energy, explores some of the advantages and disadvantages of renewable energy as used to avert accumulation of carbon dioxide in a bid to ensure a friendly environment.
