Much of the work that relates to the citizen falls on the elected official. Despite the fact that the duty of the elected official is to represent the people, the public professional sees to it that the needs of the citizens reach the elected official. If, for instance, there is a problem that concerns the citizens, the public professional has the responsibility to ensure that the problem is addressed by the elected official. However, much of the bulk work will be done by the public professional. For all this to work effectively, it is essential for the communication relationship between the elected official and public professional to be efficient.
When the public professionals serve as citizens in lieu of the rest of us the needs of the citizens have a higher chance of being addressed. The elected official may be overwhelmed by his duties in office to the extent that he may neglect his duties to the citizens he or she represents. The public official serves to bridge the gap between the citizens and the elected official. The public professionals, when in such a position as this one, should exercise ethical conduct when administering their duties since not all of the demands and needs of the citizens can be solved.
It is true that elected officials are in office for a shorter time than the public professionals. The relationship is interdependent since the public professional has more insight on how the duties of the office are conducted. The elected official’s duty is to represent the citizens that elected him or her. However, the elected official cannot just come into office and start addressing the issues raised by the citizens without following certain protocols that seek to up hold ethical conduct in office. The public professional is concerned with how those issues raised by the citizens and brought forward by the elected official can be addressed ethically.
