A day was set aside to visit a children shelter, to bring cheer and joy to the children. Fun activities took place such as entertainment by a clown, who performed a magic show and painted the children’s faces, and playing different games to interact with the children. The children got some gifts as a sign of appreciation. Before leaving, an interview with the shelter’s director was carried out. The discussion was on the health educator’s background experience as a professional and the educational preparation.
The director stated that he had more than fifteen years of experience in working in childcare. He received training that enables him to perform assessments and facilitate parenting classes. He is still studying, majoring in psychology. The director is to some extent aware of education concerning mental health. He claims that most children are misdiagnosed. Some children do not require the treatment they are receiving. He strongly believes that there is a great need for mental health education as there are more children, who suffer from mental health problems. Mental health education comprises of both care and treatment of the children with these mental health problems.
Thus, for the health education program should be reviewed and improved in order to help the children and the health professionals. Instead of going direct to prescribing medication for the mental health problems, the health education program should come up with other methods. These methods may include different activities that aid in mental development. The director is doing a great job with the children and their mental development. With the great ideas, he has on improving the health education program; we only hop that the needs of the program will be met.
