Airlines are companies operating a system of scheduled flights that transports goods and passengers across regions of the world. News reported by various media has shown that airlines encounter various problems as explained in this paper. The first problem encountered is the loss of travelers luggage .This comes as a result of luggage destination misdirection by flight attendants. In cases where the luggage is traced then some of the contents are stolen and replaced by strange paraphernalia that were not originally in the luggage thus adversely affecting the concerned airline reputation (Banstetter 1).
Another problem is computer system breakdowns leading to delayed flights thus inconveniencing the travelers. This comes as a result of power supply interruption or software and hardware breakdown .According to Carey, computer breakdown causes more problems than any other breakdown that occurs (6). Security issues is another problem facing airlines, mostly because of terrorists attacks .Airlines are therefore compelled to adopted costly security measures such as using biometric identification technologies so that they may identify potential threats especially after September 11 attack. According to Caroline et al., rising fuel costs is another major problem (25). It causes high costs of operations thus making many airline companies to close their operations since labor unions have blocked merging as an option to reduce costs. Inadequate airline transportation infrastructure is another major problem facing airlines. For instance, there are inadequate runways to accommodate large number of planes.
