This paper highlights the major categories of human environmental hazards. Basically, it identifies four categories, namely; Biological hazards, Chemical hazards, Physical hazards and the Cultural hazards.
Cultural hazards are caused as a result of our occupation, where we stay and live, socioeconomic status as well as the behavioral choices (Boorse and Wright, 2011). They are hazards brought about by what a person does to himself/herself simply to derive some benefit or pleasure. Because of the benefit, the individual assumes all the risks associated with the act. They directly deny and convince themselves that the hazard is null. Examples are smoking and drinking of alcohol to help calm nerves even though the consequence is hazardous. Also building a home near a power line and deciding to live in it for longer may put a person at risk of being of infected with cancer as well as use of drugs.
Biological hazards are brought about as result of the ecological interaction of organisms (Boorse and Wright, 2011). They constitute virus or bacterial infections as well other pathogens. They are also transmissible diseases like tuberculosis and AIDS. Although they can easily be get rid of, they spread daily from person to person. A mere interaction with another individual can make a person a prey of biological hazard.
Physical hazards are those which take place naturally. They are hazards associated with outcome of meteorological, geological or hydrological forces (Boorse and Wright, 2011). They include events like tornadoes, tsunamis, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, hurricanes and floods. Such hazards occur without warning and may come undetected.
Chemical hazards on the other hand are toxic and are carcinogenic besides being found in anything whose make up is chemical (Boorse and Wright, 2011). A person may be exposed to such chemical merely by breathing or through consumption via drinks or food or may as well by absorption through the skin. Examples of such agents are cleaning agents, pesticides, fuels and industrial waste.
