1820: First medical school in Montreal.
1892: William Osler wrote “The Principles and Practice of medicine”, which served as the basic handbook for Canadian doctors for decades.
1946: Saskatchewan passed “Saskatchewan Hospitalization Act” to ensure free hospitalization.
1957: Canadian government created “ Hospital Insurance and Diagnostic Services Act” which covered 50% of all expenses.
1984: Canada Health Care Act was passed to start a publicly funded Medicare system.
Slide 3: Government Involvement
As per 1867 Constitution Act government was not responsible for Healthcare.
After 50 years of debate during 1930s finally provincial and federal government were made responsible for healthcare.
Government funds almost all hospitalization, doctor’s expense and some prescription medication.
70% of the total medical cost is currently funded by government.
First Nations health is full responsibility of government.
Dentistry, Optometry and many prescription drugs are not included into government Medicare coverage.
Slide 4: Private Entities Involvement
Funding is provided by Government but most services are provided by private entities.
27.6% of the total medical expense is paid by private insurance companies or out of pocket.
75% of the Canadians some form of private insurance over and above the government provided Medicare.
Most of the private insurance comes from employers.
Doctors are paid based on pay-per-visit basis.
Average salary of doctors are $202,000 per year.
Huge shortage of physicians in some specialties like gynecologists.

70% of the total medical funding is provided by government higher than most countries..
Per Capita healthcare expenditure in 2012 was $5948 lower than most developed countries.
Healthcare cost is 11.4% of total GDP lower than many countries.
Canadians are happy about the publicly funded healthcare system.

US government contributes 45% towards total healthcare cost compared to 70% by Canadian government.
US healthcare system is mostly dominated by private entities but in Canada private entities are less dominant.
Per capita medical expenditure in US is much higher than that of Canada.
Out of pocket expense in US is much higher than that of Canada.

Life expectancy in Canada is 81.3 more than US( 78.1)
Infant Mortality rate of Canada is better (4.5) than US(6.9)
Quality of healthcare service is better in US than in Canada.
Average wait time in Canada for a specialist appointment is 59 days, much higher than that of US (20 days).
