Global Warming Myth
Global warming is one of the biggest threats facing humanity and it is vital to understand its history and the pieces of evidence that will support the theory (Maslin 17). Global warming has been in existence for more than one hundred years but it was only during the late 1980s that it has been taken seriously as a world issue. The delay in recognizing global warming threat is due to the power of the global average temperature data. The temperature can be determined by taking into account the land-air and sea-surface temperature. It was during 1940s to 1970s that the global temperature curve experienced a general downward trend. As a result, many of the scientists had begun to study whether the Earth was entering the next great ice age (Maslin 17). The reason for the delay in recognizing the global because of fear that was developed due to the heightened awareness during the 1970s and compared the variable global climate had been in the past. One of the effects of global warming is the increase number of storms (Maslin 17). The study of palaeoceanology or the past oceans has shown that there are 32 glacial-interglacial or what has been known as cold and warm cycles for the past 2 and a half million years. Several scientists and media have disregarded the science revelations in the 1950s and 1960s in favor of global cooling.
However, it was during the 1980s that the new ice age scenario has been put in issue. By the latter part of the 1980s that the global annual mean temperature curve drastically increased. As a result, the dormant evidence that were gathered for the years 1950s to the 1960s were reconsidered and given prominence, which gave birth to the Global Warming Theory (Maslin 20).
Michaels stated that with the passing of time, it appear that science has no longer given enough justification for the drastic enactment global warming legislation (CATO). The previous studies made by Al Gore and his associates in 1998 who claimed that science is already settled on global warming has not yet taken effect. Some of the critics of Gore’s viewpoint argued that although 1998 has been the hottest year in modern history that was ever recorded, the cause of the hot climate was caused by the El Nino phenomenon in the Pacific Ocean. It bears stressing that in the year 2001 or three years after the 1998 Gore research has produced the same result where in there was no warming experienced in the world.
Thesis Statement: Al Gore’s theory of global warming is considered a myth since even science has not provided enough justification to support the global warming legislation.
Based on the 1998 report of Noah Keenlyside from the Leipzig Institute of Marine Science in Germany, it was published in the newspaper about nature forecasting that there will be no additional global warming for the next ten years (CATO). The group headed by Keenlyside discovered that the natural variability that can be found in the oceans of the earth shall briefly counterbalance the global warming from carbon dioxide. It was shown that 70 percent of the surface of the Earth is composed of oceans. As an effect, the existence of these oceans had significantly influenced global temperature. The research has discovered that both Atlantic and Pacific temperatures for a decade or longer, especially when they involve warm or cool patterns (CATO). There was the Pacific temperature pattern that has been part of the forecast which did not promote global not to push warming. In addition, the Climate Security Act, espoused by Joe Lieberman and John Warner, have been intended to reduce the emissions of carbon dioxide, which has been identified as the primary “global warming” gas to at least 66 percent for the next 42 years (CATO). The prediction on the number of population progress meant that there is a 90 percent decrease in emissions per capita, which can be comparable to the 19th-century levels. Hence, it has been shown that relying on science and false conclusions and that the much anticipated Global Warming Theory is just a myth.
Further, Fumento clarified that a nonprofit group referred to as Public Agenda and American Geophysical Union (AGU) has expressed public frustration about global warming and other pollutants (“The Cooling Off on Global Warming”). Based on the study, there was a substantial decline in many pollutants. Thus, in effect, there is about a 50% drop on global warming by the late 20th century. Fumento are growing tired of political jargon about global warming and other contributing pollutants. This feeling amongst Americans stem from the constant blame game that is in place to explain natural/manmade disasters like heat waves and hurricanes to name a few. The author claims that Vice President Al Gore is a peddler or contributor in the blame of environmental events to global warming. There is scientific fact that has collectively convinced thousands of scientists to declare that the human race is not the cause of global warming. While there are some who believed the global warming is merely a business ventures to scare people into myths and false accounts and man-made. The author presents certain books that exclaim the cause and effects of global warming and different steps and developments needed to combat this ideological environmentalism.
On the other hand, Frank Houston interviewed John Wallace who is a political journalist and a scientific journalist, who studied the misconceptions and inaccuracies portrayed by his interpretations of scientist findings and articles. Houston asked a series of questions which confirms that there are many discrepancies in the media with as there is genuine reporting’s on global warming. Wallace refers to many reporters that have actually reported true and sincere finding and many other blunders that have created fear within many scientists in presenting their finding due to the irreversible damage done with false or obscure reporting. Finally, was answered by Wallace on the global warming issue that states historical fact that there are conflicting measurements and reports that global warming/global cooling is taking place. The answer was interesting by far by Wallace because there seems to be some truth to the global warming effect but there is a matter of debate on weather man is responsible or not (“Covering the Climate: Beware of False Conflict”).
On the other hand, Johnson explained the scientific theory of Karl Popper. In a nutshell Johnson explains Poppers 2 points that discredits all notions of the human race being the key proponents that has caused global warming (“Peer Pressure”). He further adds that interest groups and lobbyists in Congress carry on the good fight to spread the event of global warming. The author also states that global warming has now expanded to include any and every weather disturbance, change, irregularity, and spontaneity. Hence, it is a manifestation that the theory of the author is inform the public that the scientific theory of Popper has proven that global warming is false and the media has staged a deceptive lie by blaming the human race as the cause for this phenomena (“Peer Pressure”).
Taranto argues that global warming is a farce and that many scientists have compromised their ethics and tainted the peer review process to appease global warming fanatics. The author also reveals thousands of emails sent by climatologist scandalous that prove that the notion of man-made global warming. He adds further that this theory of man-made global warming had affected various media outlets in the world and had shown that peer review process has been compromised. This is affirmed by the media, and politicians to establish the false theory that global warming caused by humanity (“Peer Pressure).”
Finally, Wallace argues that global warming as it is portrayed is a crock of sh*t since the case is not settled nor closed on man-made global warming. He showed how a large number of scientists at Copenhagen claim that the issue of man-made climate change is not settled and too complex to claim the issue as settled. The author provides evidence of mini-ice ages and climate events of thousands of years ago, 36 years ago, and present day in order to show that global climate change is unpredictable and too complex to just blame humanity. Wallace also presented the scientific disagreement amongst a plethora of media pundits, politicians, and scientist on this theory of humanity being responsible for unexplained climate change and global warming. He pointed out that humanity has this innate gift of adaptation that has helped us survive thousands of years after the major ice age that cause mass extinction of prehistoric animals (“Is Global Warming?”).
The arguments claiming that global warming is happening lack concrete evidence to support such conclusion. To conclude the report of Al Gore has shown that global warming is a myth due to the following reasons: 1.) The depths of the Little Ice Age (LIA) as his baseline for comparison is erroneous when he compared the timing of the retreat of glaciers with the timing of carbon emissions. It is important to note that the Earth had significant warming in the past and if the LIA is considered as a normal climate, comparison with this baseline will indicate that the Earth is experiencing significant warming (Rapp, 2008, p.343). 2.) The report that the entire Antarctica Ice Sheet is nearing to disintegrate claiming that scientists found it to be astonishing due to the effect of global warming. The sea level rise is regarded as the most important impact of global warming and the reductions in the Greenland Ice Sheet are of greater importance. However, there is evidence which shows that as losses take place at the margins of the ice sheet, there is more ice that is added to the center which needs to be closely monitored. While it is true that future global warming is a legitimate concern, the connection of the warming to the carbon dioxide greenhouse effect remains to be uncertain (Rapp, 2008). Therefore, the inconsistent data in the report manifest that there is a basis to disbelieve global warming. Due to the undetermined causes of climate changes, it is recommended that sufficient funding from the government should be allocated to support the climatologists to pursue further studies. This course of action will aid the experts to identify the major climate concerns facing humanity.
