GLOBALIZATION AND HRM STRATEGIES
Google is one among the most popular and well established Multinational enterprises. It has dominated market position over a long period of time since it was founded. The Google Company was found by two students named Larry Page and Sergey Brin. It was a research project while still schooling at the Stanford University in the year 1996 (Susan, 2009). Google is an American company whose headquarters also known as Googolplex are located on Amphitheatre Parkway in Mountain View Santa Clara County in California
Contrary to what most consumers think, that Google competes in the search engine as the industry, the true facts are that the company focuses the most in the online advertising industry. Predominately, this is achieved by implementing various innovative programs such as Ad Words and Ad sense. Awards program enables advertisements from various advertisers to be shown to the user of the search engine while on various web pages. On the other hand, Ad sense is a program whose function allows advertisements to be displayed on user’s page when they login to website owned by specific companies (Susan, 2009). Apart from Ad Words and Ad Sense, the corporation also invests in products and services provision. Google maps, Gmail, news YouTube video, calendars, search engine, online books, Smartphone, tablets and laptops are some examples of products and services Google corporation offers.
The size of this company is depicted by the way it has grown over the time. Of late, Google has been able to establish seventy offices worldwide in more than forty countries. Owing to the fact that it is the leading search engine that has dominated the market for a long time, Google profits are unimaginable. There are thirty two thousand, four hundred and sixty seven employees working with Google. They are entitled to benefits such as free transport, housing and family vacations.
Globalization is the historical process of international interaction and integration of traders, enterprises and countries resulting events that rapidly transform the world by eliminating all barriers to trade, sharing knowledge, culture, ideas and other types of lifestyles (John and Sarianna, 2008). One the causes of Globalization are Improved Internet Technology. This makes communicating and exchange of ideas worldwide very simple and inexpensive. Google has made the globe be like a village. This has affected the business world of today in terms of human resource Management.
Human resource managers must change their mode of management with time due to changes or innovations of new idea and strategies around the world. Google provides this distribution of knowledge via programs such as emails, YouTube, web cam and also web pages. On the other end client or web user display their reactions toward these programs by voting, logging rates and also direct reply and grading. This is where a human resource manager who is adaptable, resilient, quick to change directions, and client-centered should focus his or her expertise. By assessing these reactions, either positive or negative, he is able to make sound, critically and creative rational decision on how to manage and mobilize the human resource effectively through planning, and controlling. He also ends in a position to train, organize and lead the employees effectively for the Success of the organization.
The labor market is the analysis of the magnitude at which workers compete for jobs and employers compete for workers (Luo, 2002). Depending on the number and type of jobs that are available, it relates to the supply of people in the given area who available, capable, qualified and willing to take the work. Google is a big and well reputed company in terms of benefits, perks and good treatment it extends to the employees. Thus most people would like to work with them. The human resource Management department enjoys slacking labor market. The number of job seekers is more than the jobs available. Human resource managers can find the right and most qualified employees from around the world through their networking rather than depending on the local and limited market. On the other hand, given the fact that Google operates in many different countries, the human resource managers faces a great challenges on how to manage and coordinate all the people. This is because different people have different cultural practice with differences in values, attitudes, and assumptions in terms of power, individualism gender, ethics religion and age.
As a growing and excelling company, Google has to maintain that trend. In order to do so, international business strategy and plans have been formulated. The two main strategies underway are to take on Facebook and the other is an implementation of Google Cloud Print. Google Cloud Print is a recent technology that enables the user to connect his printers directly to the web. This will enable users to have work printers available to use anywhere and to anyone since it can be connected to phones.
The Strategy to Take on Facebook is more of bait than user’s random choice. The plan is to use a program called Zagat reviews that will be facilitated through Google plus Local. This will outflank Facebook thus allowing for a step of convenience to the user. This will then show all the associated merits of Google plus social media platform. This will be made possible by using Zagat reviews and making Google plus more attractive. In order to do this, the HRM department must employ resources such as web designers and advertising through different media.
The Human Resource Management (HRM) that cuts across the border is referred to as International Human Resource Management (IHRM). In order to improve the productivity and competitiveness of the company, Google International Human Resource Management should implement the following function: Hiring qualified personnel for the project, training through career development programs and also compensating them. Needless to say the Human resource managers must ensure a safe and healthy working condition, labor relation and collective bargaining (Luo, 2002).
Another very vital role is to implement performance appraisals. In order to achieve their mission which is “to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful", the employees must be hardworking. It is through performance appraisals process where performance, adequacy and communication of worker are monitored. Appraisals are very important to the management as it acts as a tool of decision making. Decisions such as promotions, demotion, discharge or renewal of contract with that same worker entirely depend on the appraisals performed on the subject.
