What are the challenges to interoperable communication?
Interoperable communications normally require the use of sophisticated technological equipment. In most cases, these standardized equipments are costly to purchase. Additionally, technology is changing rapidly, which makes it necessary to upgrade the costly technologies and equipment used in interoperable communications (Moore, 2011). For instance, according to Moore (2011), between 2006 and 2008 resulted to an increase of about $5 billion to provide nationwide interoperable communications. Resources availability for interoperable communications mainly depends on the availability of the funds (Desourdis, 2009). Additionally, the state and local governments also provide resources in terms of labor and funding.
What does interoperable communications system compromise?
Interoperable communications system consists of different services. These include emergency medical services (EMS), police services and fire and rescue across different government levels at federal, state and local levels (Miller, Hess and Orthmann, 2013). These different services utilize mobile communications systems and wireless communication systems.
Technology for a fully integrated, national communication system? Why?
Wireless technology would have to be used since it offers a wider coverage area of communication. Additionally, it can be utilized in areas where traditional telephone lines are not available.
Do you believe that the interoperability challenge will be solved with a national system linking government agencies at all levels?
Linking government agencies will mostly likely enhance the interoperability of communications systems. The collaborative effort between different government agencies allows for the full utilization of any capabilities in the communications system. Additionally, linking government agencies can ensure that cases of public safety and natural disasters such as terrorism are addressed properly. Various departments involved include public health, hospitals and emergency management services (Homeland Security, 2003).
