The model was originally described by Victor Vroom and Philip Yetto in the year 1973. Later, it was replaced by decision tree system, which was developed by Vroom and Arthur Jago in the year 1988. The model is much applied and used in decision making and leadership . Introverts are individuals who focus on self-interest without considering others while extraverts are much concerned with others’ than their own affairs.
When using this model to make decisions, there are various things that should be considered. These include quality of the decision, commitment of the subordinates and the time needed for the decision to be made. If the decision is complex and its quality is needed to be high, more people should be used in making it, especially if the decisions are of the same nature.
The second consideration is the commitment of the subordinate on how they are concerned with the decision. This involves assessing whether the subordinates will by the decisions made. If they show commitment and signs of embracing the decision, then it is eminent to involve them and increase their participation. Finally, time constraint dictates the level of pursuing a certain decision.
There are three styles in the models. These are autocratic, consultative and collaborative styles. Autocratic style is where decision is made by the leader then they inform the other team members. The consultative style is where the information is gathered from the team, but the decision is made by the leader alone. Lastly, is the collaborative style where the leader and team work together in arriving at a consensus, thus having a common decision.
In conclusion, the model caters for both introverts and the extroverts in making decisions depending on the situation and the nature of the decisions to be made.
